The Labour Government

I think you are being naive to suggest Governments can force the BoE to adjust interest rates at their will

Clearly I disagree as its pretty obvious to me that that is the way things work.

Bailey is due for replacement anyway, his forecasts have been disastrous, he's been a particularly poor B of E Governor by most measures.

I really hope she gives him the boot sharpish.

Oh I was. Maybe not in the Socialist echo chamber that most Politics threads are.
But see last post for my actual opinions.
The problem is we need growth to pay for anything. We aren't getting it (and BTW many EU nations are in a worse state).
You can't increase the cake to divide amongst society needs via government expenditure without growth.
That has to be the KEY goal of any government.
If you just pay off the debt our society is doomed to stagnation.
The problem is that sometimes there cannot be growth without expenditure, regardless of whether it is funded via other growth, cuts or whatever.

I've used this example on another post but childcare costs are one example. Childcare is very expensive, expensive enough that it's often financially better to work less hours than pay for childcare whilst working. The government can plug this gap by subsidising childcare which means people work and are more productive

There are also the railways, how many hours of productivity have been lost over the last 10 years due to late or cancelled trains? I can remember the city parade last year, we had to leave 2hrs early because every train afterwards was cancelled. We otherwise might of spent more hours in the pub, so lost income for the pub.

These are just anecdotal examples but critical infrastructure is not an optional expense. We need to get back to basics when it comes to spending. IE, get transport and the main things working, then make hard decisions to strip away anything else that is otherwise optional and let's see where the financial blackholes are then.

Trouble brewing for Streeting, there is a sense he has pitted NHS workers against each other with the junior doctor rise versus 5.5% for rest and there is a lot of anger from nurses and ward staff today. He’s going to need to move to head off industrial action from those on AfC (ward clerks, nurses, HCA’s, domestics etc) as they all want their pay restoration now. Gone is the sense of NHS unity of all being fucked over together. Mrs MB said in work today they are all talking about strike action, she said the anger is much worse than when they actually went out on strike.

Unless Streeting is a fucking idiot he would have known this risk existed. If he has gambled that it will blow over he may well lose that bet and if it blows up the nurses don’t appear to be in the mood to want to play nicely this time with a feeling of let the fucking junior doctors stick on an apron and do our work until we get what they got.

Wilson got it wrong, a day, not a week, is a long time in politics.

As I remarked in another forum, the Tories held down public sector wages artificially for more than a decade, out of spite, ignorance, or sheer hatred of the public sector. We are now reaping the harvest and it won't be pretty. There will be what the market calls in other circumstances 'an adjustment.' This could easily have been avoided by paying just a bit more each year, and that would also have saved the costs of a recruitment crisis.

Many so-called 'savings' are in fact either deferrals (kicking the can down the road) or transfers (e.g. lack of road maintenance, where costs are passed to private individuals and insurance companies.)

A woman I know is an Occupational Therapist at Christies. When I last saw her, about 12 months ago, we were talking about the JD's and their pay dispute.
Was quite surprised how vehement she was about them...she wasn't happy about their demands
