God knows off the top off my head. There were all sorts over the 14 years and I don't keep a ranked list in my head to spout on demand. Truss not getting the BoE or markets on board before the radical budget, was certainly one. And in that budget, reducing the top rate of tax from 45% to 40% whilst making economic sense, was unnecessary and optically really bad. Not getting immigration under control, definitely another. Partygate was not a big deal in my mind but I can see how politically damaging it was.

How about you? What do you think were their biggest blunders?

Partygate, dodgy contracts to their mates in covid, the Liz Truss debacle causing me (and many more cash strapped workers with young families) to pay an extra £300 per month on our mortgages, Brexit, Brexit negotiations, plan for Brexit when it was voted for, the lack of stability within Ministers tenures (was it 14 Housing Ministers in 14 years or something?), constant short termism of their plans, HS2 being voted for and then subsequently scrapped in the areas that needed it most.

That’s just off the top of my head…a lot.

I think Starmer has done a good job so far, needs to tweak WFA criteria and the clothing donor issue is very disappointing, but overall doing well.

And as I have said previously, I think the better off pensioners who can afford it, should go without the WFA. Those on the cusp need to be reviewed.

I find some of the above, frankly pretty ludicrous. I am not going to pick holes in them 1 by 1, and some are valid. But just a couple:

1. You do recall that the Tory party campaigned for Remain, do you? Some Tories were pro-Brexit of course but the party's official position, the position it campaigned for, led by our PM at the time, was Remain.

2. PPE contracts. Now this REALLY pisses me off. People have the temerity to have banked 80% of their pay for doing fuck all for 1.5 years, gleefully accepting vast amounts of money for doing absolutely fuck all, and in the depths of the crisis when the country was desperate for PPE and had to turn to anyone and anywher they could get it, then maybe some iffy contracts were handed out. And all the whining cunts can manage instead of "thanks for 1.5 years pay for doing fuck all" is "what about the PPE contracts". Shameful.

LOL. No mate, I just think with everything country went through over COVID and people genuinely trying to do their best, the lack of appreciation for what the Tories did for people is quite staggering and pretty unedifying.

I'm not defending it, I just think in the grand scheme of things it's a drop in the ocean compared to what has happened to pensioner wellbeing over many years. It's as though pensioners shouldn't care about their health, wellbeing and social care being taken away but god forbid you ever take away that £300. Yeah Labour have done it but the Tories did far worse and so we now have a Labour government, let's see where the next 5 years takes us?

Labour should be criticised but they should also be given time. We're talking about a winter benefit that is payable in winter, it's barely autumn and it's sunny and 20°c out, it won't become an issue for months and there may yet be a remedy. I don't believe that Labour will just decide to permanently degrade pensioner benefits and see them become worse than the Tories.

Labour are working in a difficult inherited fiscal climate and a governmental system built around 15 years of Tory policy. I'll reserve my judgement and things do often get worse before they get better. Were you one of those calling for Pep's head after 2 months?

So after all this time you never thought it was a great idea in the first place?

Oooohhhh I am celebrating today, it is wonderful news. I may not be getting the £300 (I'm over 80 so I would have been) WFA but I will be getting the £10 bonus.
I am so thrilled, so grateful, so delighted, so contented. I'm thinking of going and booking myself a holiday. I'm sure £10 will get me to the bottom of my garden and back. Oh delirium.

This makes it a welfare issue, penalizing those who saved for their “golden years” by forgoing the flash car, the nail job or the 5 pints a night!

Means testing is an ugly business, but ugly business appears to be a specialty in Britain at present.

WE're just keeping him company as he's got no work to do. Yep, the furlough scheme, self employed help, 10k for small businesses with premises, loans, business rate cuts, mortgage holidays and more all soon forgotten and all while capt hindsight wanted the country shut down completely.

This thread is very partizan. Its possible disagree with policy decisions and not be pro/against a particular political party.

From a personal point of view...

- UK Energy makes sense as does renationalised railways.

- The WFA has been bluntly applied and whilst I agree with the principle that those who are wealthy enough should not get it, the cliff edge is not right.

- Settlement of disputes,

With the junior doctors, good that its resolved, but the discussion is clearly not finished and threats are already there to take more action. If so then any future deal should have some level of reform going the other way.

ASLEF - as I posted previously it looks like the government folded without getting any reforms.

Rwanda - absolutely the correct thing to do.

Since we are all members of the public it is fair to refer to it as our money. You can split hairs all you want but the fact remains that what chippy said is true.

No because it's held in trust for your benefit (as a citizen) but you are no longer the legal owner and you have no entitlement it other than using public services or receipt benefits which you are eligible to.
