It's not only optics.

It's fucking diabolical rank hypocrisy that speaks volumes about the nature of the man in question. He spent YEARS spouting vitriol at the Tories for this sort of thing, whilst all along, doing the exact same thing, only more so, himself. What sort of person does that? What does that say about his sense of superiority above others? One rule for everyone else, but ok for him.

Second, there are genuine questions about improper influence being gained and in certain circumstances, direct conflict of interest.

And what about the free everything else? He's taken £100k in freebies in recent years.

If I took £1k in freebies from a supplier or a customer, I would be sacked.
 
Kuennsberg is Kuennsberging. Ages badgering about something Rayner had answered, and then an obsession with an exact number on a policy, just as she did last week about building cladding (quite obviously no specific date could be put on that as it's reliant on having contractors to do it and it'll vary across the country, so why ask over and over when it'll be done).

Rayner's dealt with her pretty competently, I think. Ten minutes on donors, 4 minutes on housing, and then 2 minutes on workers' rights, 2 minutes on Fayed/CPS.

Asking the Deputy Prime Minister if she's willing to be a pain in the neck for the govt is downright odd as a question. Cue more questions about whether she's being marginalised.

Absurd but entirely expected focus. Turns to the panel, and straight back on donations - with the handpicked emails received (no emails then saying 'who cares'? then).

And then Philp coming on to say "we never gave donors passes" amidst the 'apparently' and 'we hear' statements - no, Philp, party treasurers just got put in the Lords in perpetuity.
I wasn't expecting to see a listing but:

Treasurer of the Conservative Party - Wikipedia

(Labour have had 8 treasurers in 40 years as far as I can tell, 2 of whom are in the Lords, covering 1992-2001).

Compare those with how many prime ministers become peers - Callaghan, Thatcher in 45 years!
 
And this registering dresses as "office expenses" is a deliberately dishonest attempt at hiding the nature of the gifts. If you tried to claim clothing as office expenses on your tax return, the taxman would be able to fine you for filing an inaccurate tax return.

I am not surprised Labour have been at this, what surprises me is their "nothing to see here" attitude having slagged the Tories off for years about similar.

They rarely are broken 'cos the people who are accused of breaking the rules are the very same who cobbled the rules together. Occasionally one of 'em gets caught,can't claim the usual 'oversight', and there's a summary sentence of a few weeks ban from the House, but it allows them to pursue one of their other income streams.

Funnily enough I saw this post from back in January, somebody complaining on the Rishi Sunak thread about Simon Clarke MP accepting a donation from JCB.

I picked this one out because it happened to mention a league table of donations. I think there was one published the other day showing which MPs have pocketed the most freebies since end-2019, so you must have been pleased to see that and presumably you’ve since called out all the worst culprits.

At this stage you either

1) Believe it is wrong for politicians to accept gifts including the very rich leader of the country or

2) You pretend it's okay because you voted for them.

Just bookmark it for when they change their minds in the future when it's suits them politically to do so. It will happen, it always does.

* edit someone did say yeah but it was of less value than some other guy. Tad hopeful that one.
