The Labour Government

That's why they've agreed to explore a modified (slower) version of the bit from Birmingham to Crewe, because putting HS2 trains via Birmingham onto the West Coast Main Line near Lichfield made no more sense than when the last government agreed to extend that phase to Crewe (then scrapped it). Nothing about Northern Powerhouse Rail announced.

There's a comprehensive spending review (CSR) in progress with the outcome revealed in Spring laying out infrastructure spending plans for the next 10 years.
I'm guessing Northern Powerhouse Rail and any HS2 add-ons will be including in this, and explains why the only rail projects mentioned today were those already under construction.

Funny how other countries seem to have high speed trains all over the place.
I guess they assess and fund them properly and more importantly keep to the budget!

Those in charge of national infrastructure projects in this country often have a vested interest in them running over programme as they make more money! Nothing is tendered on a fixed price. Money for old rope, It's scandalous.

You don't know what pedantic means. A 50% increase in a bus fare when inflation has been around 2-3 % recently is a big hike. So if I say an inflation only rise would have been better and given reasons that isn't pedantry its a logical argument.

Saying well err but yeah they you know only had 2 option scrapping it or £3 and £3 only is stupidity.

I'm happy in the knowledge that my definition of stupidity is correct and you have used pedantry very stupidly.

Anyhow its budget day for the purples so its best we enjoy the calm before the storm.

I predict the quartet of cretins will pretend it was a very good budget indeed because :-

I will give an honest assessment because we are strangers on a football forum and what we say doesn't change fuck all. I have nothing to sell or a side to protect. Some have a problem with that though such is the tribal nature of things.
No, I should have just stuck to my first thought that you're actually a patronising twat! You completely missed and didn't bother to ask why I described you as pedantic.

I'm delighted that you're happy with your definition of stupidity and I am humbled by your superior knowlege on the matter.

I assume just because I am so stupid, I am not one of the "quartet of cretins" you speak about, but if I am one of them who are the other 4? lol

Just whilst we are on the subject of stupidity and pedantry though, you say:

"I will give an honest assessment because we are strangers on a football forum and what we say doesn't change fuck all"

Is this not the extremely poor use of a double negative? Something I'm sure the rest of the forum contributors will be staggered, nay, positively shocked to see you use.

I never claimed to be super intelligent but I certainly aint as bad at receiving criticism as you. Just think if you had spent even just 10% of your time you have wasted on arguing with me on the logic of your first post you wouldn't.have come up with something so silly in the first place.

Doesn't change fuck all is heavily used and understood by all, dare I say you have wandered into pedantry:-)

Irony and sarcasm are totally lost on you mate. But you must be super intelligent because almost everyone you reply to is either stupid, a cretin or just an expert who is wrong. But as you say "doesn't change fuck all" as it's understood by all. Enjoy the match later.

I've been sarcastic with you from the very first post ya daft donk. The vast majority of my posts haven't been calling people stupid or a cretin, so your special in that regard;-) As for irony i burnt a shirt once so the wife does it,:-) Enjoy the game yourself.

Was it good or bad then?
Scrap that, can’t trust any of you, half will say it’s the worst budget in history and half will say the country has been saved in one fell swoop!! Haha!

Not from me, mate. The wheels have been set in motion, let’s see where it leads us.

Although, I will say that this government feels extremely competent compared to the last few.

No barbs have really hit. It’ll be back to freebie-gate tomorrow.

Announced that the Miners Pension fund will have money refunded (£1.5 billion )

Great news ...... some injustices being resolved at last... Post Office / Blood Scandal / Theft of Miners Pensions .... lets hope that they move into WASPI Women and Grenfell next .

There were no “that’s terrible” announcements. Reeves is backing that she can spend money better than business. It will have some impact on jobs in the private sector to some degree - this in turn will reduce growth. The housing market will suffer a bit but some may say that’s not a bad thing and if the state is building a bunch of houses it shouldn’t dampen builders prospects.

There are a couple of growth items in there and a bit to make everyone’s lives a bit nicer with potholes gone and waiting lists reduced.

So in summary I’d say it was fairly neutral overall, is that a good outcome for an extra £40bn? Hmmm, time will tell. It’s much harder for the state to spend money well than it is to get more of it.

Personally I was disappointed she missed the opportunity to have rolled back a bit on WFA and offered a bit more support to those just over the threshold. But she’s sticking to her guns on that, perhaps hoping for a mild winter so pensioners get their rise in time for next winter.

Spot on. Although it’s not theft of miners pension it certainly is right what the government are doing now with the surplus, and is overdue.

Tuition fees to rise, I am pretty sure I recall Sir Keir promising to abolish these before he was elected. This looks like yet another broken tax promise ? But this one is only picked up by English people.

Inevitable after limiting overseas students visas. They paid far more per head to subsidise U.K. students, I’m surprised the increase isn’t much more.
