The Labour Government

If you read the detail, you can see why they’re doing it. They do need to get a move on with the strategic review, not sure when they said they’d complete it by.

Presumably they've announced it because it would become evident very quickly at the sites.

The ships sound fairly clear to decide on - weird that the shadow defence person is arguing that the two being held in port were useable. I wonder when it was found that the cost of repair to the frigate were prohibitive.

So outdated equipement , so they can invest in more modern stuff, backed by everyone so far

Stand down tory boys and girls
Another stick to beat the new government with after the old government let it all go to shit. Probably the real reason Ben Wallace resigned when he was defence secretary as he had experience and knew what he was talking about.

Won't someone think of the supermarkets. They only make billions in profit and apparently they will have to pass NI costs onto us? We need the supermarket regulators to tell them to get fucked and stop rinsing us since they've been allowed to have a monopoly.
Interesting doorstep conversation with a non-voter, ex Tesco manager, who said they'd be looking to raise prices when minimum wage went up.

It’s funny how people are so forthcoming to say they vote labour but somehow seem embarrassed to say they vote Tory. The House of Commons comprises of 650 MP’s,it’s a nice cosy little club for the member's,they squabble and argue amongst themselves to make things look genuine,to somehow justify their existence. They are financed through it very nicely and go on some fact finding missions to some nice locations, all paid for by us.How often do we hear people say that people died for us to be able to vote, fine people died for us to be entitled not to vote as well.Equally people say that one can only moan about Politcians if you vote,I take the opposite view, you should only be able to moan about politicians if you don’t vote. The only answer is don’t vote the so and so’s in (although this would clearly never happen),consequently we are stuck with the political system we have.

More “difficult decisions” to come and nothing but words with no detail as to what comes next.

Lap it up by all means, I’m not going to and I voted Labour.

Taxes need to go up because the country is so broke that services are falling apart at the seams. Yes, there's still some waste in the system. All organisations (including my household) have some waste in them. You can't eliminate it altogether, any more than you can eliminate friction. In any case, if we hadn't bought that lettuce we didn't eat the other week, it would not make much difference to our overall position, would it?

Labour ruled out increasing income tax, NI and VAT as an electoral pledge. This means they have to raise what might be called peripheral taxes instead. Maybe this was ill-advised, but then again, too many people fiddle income tax as it is, and you might argue that increasing it would encourage further fiddling. (More cash-in-hand, for example.)

I think wealth is undertaxed and income somewhat overtaxed, and I would like to see a shift to more tax on wealth. The vehicle I suggest for this is Land Value Tax. But can you imagine the reaction? What we have here is some farmers having to pay IHT on a more favourable basis to anyone else except the King, and they are up in arms. Imagine what LVT would spark! Even if accompanied by cuts in income tax, the wealthy would go beserk. So no wonder politicians fiddle at the edges, even with a parliamentary majority of well over 100.

We know they’ve committed upping spending to 2.5% and are doing the strategic review.

We won’t get the detail until they’ve done that, which I agree with. The question then though is when are they going to complete it as the sooner the better.

I honestly dont understand what they thought would happen to sort it all out . They said everyone would have to pitch in and that is what they are doing . Really hard decisions being made . I agree with means testing wfa but they should have said it would kick in next winter and they should have increased the amount of people who could claim pension credit so the poorer pensioners could get it . They should have torn up the application forms for pension credit and made it easier and shorter and let people apply by phone

They have fucked that up imo , dropped it in so close to winter was not fair on anyone
