The main disincentive now for going into politics, especially at local level, is the abuse - from media, now social media, and from people who haven't got a clue about how things work or how much they cost. (Cue your local Reform-led council....)

The nearest thing we had to taxing the value of land consumed was destroyed because Thatcher said something had to be done about the rates, some idiot said "a poll tax is something" and Thatcher said "Then that's what must be done".

The massive transfer of wealth to the rich was just a convenient side benefit.

Do you hold all politicians to that standard? Or just Labour ones?

Because you must be well aware, as a reasonably informed person, that the House of Commons is full of grifting cunts and has been for - well, essentially forever.

But the media turns a blind eye to most of it as, again, you must be well aware. Maybe because the media itself is largely owned by grifting cunts with (extreme) right-wing views. How many of these 'patriotic' media owners even pay UK tax? Gey few, and they're all deid, as the Scots say.
 
I might add that any Labour politician with assets above (say) 200k will be called a 'champagne socialist' even if they have paid every penny of tax due and not even tried to avoid it, let alone evade it. Because apparently, as a socialist, you should be penniless, so people can call you bitter, envious and jealous. You are not allowed to earn money by your own efforts unless you don't give a fuck about the community or, indeed, anyone but yourself.

It’s the Labour government thread, so unsurprisingly I post in here on matters relating to the Labour government and its ministers.

The same government that, due to its chronic mismanagement of the fiscal position, has been floating a range of what appear stringent and damaging potential tax increases on the housing market and property wealth more generally. During this process, we learn that the deputy prime minister - a particularly vocal proponent of higher taxes - has employed the services of a tax avoidance company to limit her tax liability in relation to the sale of a previous property, and made the nonsense claim that a property in Hove is her main residence in order to avoid £40,000 in tax.

It’s off the scale hypocrisy, and yet the people on here who spend countless hours advocating a hard left, high tax philosophy are all too happy to either excuse it, or simply ignore it.

As a reasonably informed person, you must also be aware of the prospect that much of this information and more general gossip is finding its way to the press via Labour MPs to discredit certain figures ahead of a likely leadership contest next year. Which provides another reason to discuss it on the Labour government thread.

The real point for me is how are they affording all these on an MP’s salary? Rayner is perhaps and easier case in point to examine as she didn’t come from money, care home worker, turned MP 10 years ago on £80 odd grand now on cabinet money and buying a spenny house on the south coast? A mortgage perhaps based on a job she could be ousted from at any time? Meh the real money in these gigs is from the book deals and speaker circuits, the gravy train runs long and true for the great and the good. And let’s be honest Rayner has a great story to tell.

The only question is do you begrudge them, given all the exceptional skills they have?

The sad reality is I firmly believe nearly everyone enters politics with the best of intentions - I wonder how many would recognise themselves today.

There is no bias or misogyny from myself or the media nor any question of legality. The reason she is being called out is as I said in my post - Hypocrisy . It appears you are unable to recognise this.
