The Labour Government

Hmm not sure what to make of the timing of the Budget. Leaving it very close to Christmas, people spend money when they have clarity not uncertainty about what taxes will/may change. Meanwhile as Reeves seems to have spotted, the economy is not performing, so why wait nearly 3 months to make changes that might fix it ?

Yup. I am amazed the this is not featuring highly in the media. Some people are in for a big shock, I think. Possibly the end of the triple lock on pensions.
I suspect you're right, just as I approach retirement having paid maximum standard rate NI for 44 years.

Our state pension is already one of the least generous in the developed world, but that's not crap enough, it seems. Needs to be even more crap.

Praying for some whiffs of fiscal improvement by then I suspect.

I think the main point is the arrest itself rather than it being five armed officers, think that happened more just because it was at Heathrow rather than any intentional requirement for it.

I do have a bit of sympathy with the police as successive governments have made the law an absolute nightmare for them to actually police. Hopefully this’ll lead to a change in it but I still think we have no idea how to govern social media or the internet.
He’s due in court in other matters this week. They could have picked him up after that of they felt they needed to. Or just ask him to come in

I don’t think they’re the worst government we’ve had by a long shot but they’re fastly moving up there with the most disappointing. So many own goals and always at the wrong time.
After the last shower they set expectations that they would act and behave differently. Adults in the room at last. People with integrity. Several resignations and issues later it ain’t panning out like that. I voted LAB last time and I don’t want politicians to act like that. If you don’t call out bad behaviour, even on your own “side”, the politicians take you and your vote for granted.

My thinking is that the public finances are in such a state (and this predates last July) that a number of difficult choices will have to be made.
Fair enough. It was just the way you worded it, saying it should go "anyway". I misinterpreted that as you meaning we should get rid of it even if there were no difficult choices.

FWIW I think the least worst option at this point would be to increase all rates of income tax. It's approaching 100% collectable and raises significant amounts of money.

Rayner will end up either getting a safe seat near her new abode or end up resigning.
Andy Burnham will end up as Ashton labour candidate, with his eyes set on being next PM

I like Angela Rayner very much, and I think much of the vitriol directed towards her is rooted in naked snobbery, but she simply has to go.
I agree that her position is untenable, but doubt she will jump nor be pushed. She must have known the optics of this latest transaction would look terrible even if she thought it legal. And yet she did it anyway. I think that means she doesn't really give a toss about public opinion so unless Starmer sacks her - which I doubt he will after his latest comments - I think she will just stay put.

Yup. Depressing how much it is down to “sides” nowadays.

Disagree. Think this will do for her before the month is out.

She should have resigned immediately, could have been a way back then. The longer they leave it the harder it will be for that to happen.
I felt very strongly about Zahawi (who was my MP at the time) and I’m not going to be a hypocrite with Rayner just because I like her.

She’s simply got to go.
