Looking at spending alone is surely short-sighted? Taxation was at its lowest under the Tories and we didn't grow much then either. With Reform all growth will just be drained into the pockets of faceless non-doms under mates rate arrangements under Farage just as the US has become with Trump.

Millions are on long-term sick and productivity is suffering alongside historically high living costs, that's where the growth has gone, it has nothing to do with taxation. Nobody is struggling to pay their bills because of taxation, the poorest and middle classes barely pay any tax but they are paying record rents and energy costs.

Resolve health problems, get people back to work and make it worthwhile, sort out the crazy energy costs and robbing supermarkets and people will have cash to spend... The economy will then grow and government will finally act for people instead of treating them as an accountants spreadsheet.

Or are you arguing that the economy is not growing because Tesco made £3bn this year instead of £3.2bn due to Reeve's NI increase (I made this figure up but the analogy is there)? People should be at the heart of government policy on the economy and this will never happen with Farage.

Your last paragraph is more than a little concerning. It has nothing at all to do with “wokeness”, nor are our courts or lawyers to blame. It is successive governments implementing poor (and conflicting) legislation.

Sort out the law.

And those are the ones that need to be sent home, like we did with the Albanians who came here for economic purposes. We all know that we need to keep people safe, and people who would do us harm also need to fall into this category, but they are a tiny minority and shouldn’t be used to depict all that try to get to these shores.

I, for one, am very grateful for what some of these people have done for us, and some have saved hundreds, maybe thousands of lives (not just UK), and it frustrates me that we don’t have a legal route, like a centre in France to apply.

People may not agree with me but my personal thoughts are that this is manufactured issue, started by the Tories who soon realised their mistake, which is now being used to divide our country by very rich people for their own gain.

My hope, and opinion is, that the majority of our people aren’t that gullible. I believe that we are good and fair people at heart but going through bad times because others can’t help themselves while watching their wealth grow exponentially.

FWIW just under half the claims for asylum are deemed to have merit. Of those with rejected claims about a.third win on appeal.

In this case, he hasn't been granted asylum, just been given extra time to provide evidence for his claim.

For those whose claims are rejected, they'll end up returned.

The problem is the frivolous claims these HR lawyers come up with. Take the one last night one of the arguments would be returning him to France would result in him being homeless and destitute - and yes that was rejected.

I’ve no problem with genuine claims (and I think we need legal and safe routes for asylum seekers) and I doubt many do but if this guy was a genuine asylum seeker that wouldn’t be one of his arguments. His trafficking allegation seems a bit fanciful as well, I mean if you’re being trafficked why would you be homeless they’d find another way to traffic you to the UK.

No more frivolous than the home office claiming that because he passed through France he wasn't entitled to claim asylum. It's what happens in legal cases, you do what you can to win.

The home office also said that he was entitled to present his case, and they wouldn't expect him to present it from France.

So why not let him present it? It will either succeed and we need to accept that he has a legitimate right to stay. Or it will fail, and he'll be gone.

What I suspect, is the government is desperate to send some people home so they can say to the Reform folk "we're tough on immigration too". But we need to be careful that we don't take away people's rights in the process.
 
Was there really only going to be one returnee on the flight ? And then takes off with no one but a few hacks onboard ?
Poor David Milliband will be beside himself once he's worked out its carbon footprint. I wouldn't blame him if decided to glue himself, naked, to a wind turbine today.

There are people on the left who recognise the grievances that a lot of people in this country are feeling around immigration (which mostly isn’t what gets attention on videos on social media where thick racist idiots go viral for being thick racist idiots). But there are too many people on the left who are too entrenched in their opposition to anything the right want or say (even though it’s by no means just the right) that they don’t take the grievances on board and just argue against it.

Would it matter either way? Because even if he’d failed and had to leave, France would just send someone who’d likely pass, so overall immigration figures would probably go up because without ‘1in1out’ we wouldn’t have someone coming the other way for every one who fails and gets deported.
