Maybe so but I don't think people would flinch at the prospect of clear intent to economic recovery.
Having said that they'll also have to seriously address the immigration expenditure.
Otherwise we'll they'll still be robbing Peter... with absolutely no economic benefit to show for any rises.

They often have done that's for sure. But now it's down to the sitting government to attempt to gain a grip on it.
It won't make them popular in some quarters but if left we'll be beyond fucked. I believe we all have a responsibility to leave the country with a future.

I don’t know. Clearly something needs to be done. It seems every government is just intent on not upsetting anyone.

A common argument and, whilst certainly true in some areas, it suggests, as is often the case, that the private sector is so much better. Frankly, it isn’t, it’s just that know nothing politicians are, mostly, absolutely fucking useless at anything…

They should bite the bullet and whack 5% on income tax across the board and restore the previous NI threshold.
We all know we need to pay more to sort this shit out. The longer we leave it the worse it's going to get.
They should be straight about it. It needs to be done. Manifesto pledges or not .

I’m sure the uncertainty of that isn’t helping people make decisions re Christmas n what not.

I know it’s gotta be held sometime but I just don’t see what was wrong with having it in March. Unless I’m imagining it was held in March previously!!

Recent times, the main time for the Budget was in the Autumn, October/November time, followed by a spring statement. I think it got a bit murky under Johnson who seemed to use the spring statement as a second budget, which Reeves reversed and returned to a single budget in Autumn.

Im not going round in circles while you give me examples of well to do pensioners. The state pension only is not a lot of money to live on. That is my view so anyone going on about the triple lock can do one until the state pension is more in line with other decent paying countries.
That is where I stand and where I will stay, if anyone wants to come up with ideas of how to take a bit more off the wealthy then fair enough.

@Blue Maverick rightly states defining what a well to do pensioner is ain't easy. For some reason a few posters seem to have a downer on the temerity of old folk to not be living off bread and water and daring not to pop their clogs for our benefit. :-)

You're right the state pension should be higher, but that requires an uplift in taxes, that no one wants.

I would increase VAT on anything over £400ish. I would increase VAT on excessive energy use (a distant friend has an indoor swimming pool that he heats all winter. £10000 was his bill last year but still only paid 4% VAT on it). I would reduce VAT on "normal use" fuel to 3%.

I'm not a pensioner yet, but I genuinely won't need the state pension as I paid at least 9% into a company scheme from the age of 18. If I live an average time I will get about £220 000 from the state. I would advocate a voluntary buy out by the state. Lets say 50% up front but then no further call on the state if you take it. The long term liability to the state disappears.

I would have people who retire early as I did continue to pay NI whilst they are in pension drawdown.

I would remove stamp duty for pensioners downsizing(figures to be determined)

A one off wealth tax over £10m may work. There was already effectively a wealth tax on pensions when someone turned 75 and no one blinked an eye at that. That was removed along with the LTA on pensions. I know someone who has a very good pension fund benefitted by £750000 at the stroke of Jeremy Hunt's pen when the LTA was removed.

It’s a fine balance. When you have political parties just trying to point score I just can’t see anything changing on that front.

The political system needs to be radically changed and modernised. No House of Lords for starters. At least 50 per cent of the world manages without a second chamber. We are stuck in the past. Everything is too slow and we have been hammered by more nimble countries.
