The Labour Party

That's the intention. Track and trains. But taking track maintenance under direct control would probably still be done by contracting with private firms - though as with train procurement that system is prone to fluctuations in demand that may leave some companies with no work at times.

I don't think we'll depart too much from EU rules on opening the system to competition (perhaps one reason why they'll still allow "open access" to companies like Hull Trains and Lumo on the East Coast main line).

Yeah, I doubt there's much drive to bring engineering internally - presumably the current franchises use contractors mainly.
There shouldn't be a lack of maintenance work though except for geographical extremities - just schedule it properly.

Has the franchise-giving window closed now? Or can the govt suddenly decide to extend current licences to screw up Labour's plan? I have no doubt that they can be that small-minded.

You'll hear the TOCs saying that rail use has vastly increased since privatisation. But so has use of London Transport which isn't privatised.

Our population has increased by 10 million since 1993 which would mean that more people use the railways, it needs bringing back into public control sooner rather than later, While they are at it they should do the same for water companies and energy.

I don't know how much t's going to cost but it has to be done.

Labour should bring the Roscos in house as they are one of the biggest money drainers.

There's plenty of trains that can run but are stored in siding because no TOC wants to pay their extortionate rent charges for them.

From my own experience I've been in meetings with management about negating issues when long term engineering works take place. We came up with a solution of being able to use a diversion route during the works that would mean we'd require another 2 x 2 car set required for the period over our current stock levels.

Management refused as the Roscoe demanded half a million pounds a week for them saying running bus replacement would be cheaper.

Outrageous that our rail services aren't nationalised anyway. The clue is in the term; public transport. A vital service to get workers from A to B shouldn't be appropriated as a cash cow for greedy investors.
The Liverpool and Manchester was public transport. So is scheduled air travel. And the Titanic. Maybe air and sea routes aren't usually considered public transport, but they're not private transport.

And if track charges were more sensible that would help.

Are they still shifting engines by road? A little diesel shunter needing works attention would have run at night at 20 mph to the works for a major overhaul, till the Thatcherite dictum of contributing to fixed costs meant it had to be put on a low-loader and carted by road.

They are.

One of our broken trains could have easily been sandwiched between others to get fixed at a specialist place. Instead they have had to go by road.

Sounds like a right scam
