The Lack of Atmosphere

This whole issue was epitomised in the Cup Final against Wigan last year. The atmosphere was a disgrace. People try their best to get it going, but sometimes it's like pulling teeth!

20 minutes of two stands singing different songs at once, then tension as we fell away. Lots of roaring late on.

That's just how it is. Some occasions get better atmospheres than others. IT won't ever change much until we pull the two singing bits together.

I'm in 212 and was shouting my tits off last night, had a rough throat when I got home. The first 20 minutes everyone around me was joining in, but it just slowly disappeared and apart from the chorus of Blue Moon after the Chelsea goal I didn't hear much else. I'm not one to start chants but I am usually one of the first to start singing when I hear one going, but there are too many people with a completely different attitude towards it. Think someone touched on it earlier but we need a dedicated 'kop' style stand. All the bollocks about the ground acoustics not being good is just an excuse. The 3000 singers we have in the Etihad just isn't enough. They sound great when they sing together and usually the other stands join in after that, but looking at the sheer size of the Holte End, the Kop, the Stretford End, they all hold around the 11k mark. For fuck sake even Stockport County's Cheadle End holds more than our SS and South Stand. I know OT is quieter than our place but that Stretford End is still massive, imagine us having 10k fans in one dedicated singing end? Would make a world of difference. Something needs to be done.

If the club moved the away fans to the other side of the south stand that problem would be solved. But they've blown it and won't put it right.

What happened to the whole stand rising spontaneously in expectation as a player is put thru on goal or a dangerous attack develops. Hardly happens anymore.

Some people don't even stand up when we score.

You can argue for hours about where to put away fans and singing sections and the ubercheesification of pre match "entertainment" but you'll be wasting your time.

The cohort has changed, they're less passionate about City and so the atmosphere suffers accordingly.

The owners have genuinely taken an interest in improving the atmosphere but they're part of the problem. While they want to help engender a good atmosphere, they want a whole lot more to have a stadium full of ABC1 types because -and lets be brutally honest here- City and Eastlands is just a giant image laundering vehicle for Abu Dhabi. They want shiny happy families holding hands not rabid young men, faces contorted with passion, bellowing obscenities at each other.

It'll never come back.

WTF !!!! Is this pre requisite of becoming a "proper fan" ?

I'm just outlining one example of fans behaving in a less passionate manner than they did years ago.

Who said anything about "proper fans"

My main annoyance with the atmosphere is pre - match, the club do everything it can to kill of any atmosphere before big games. They have bands playing live 10 mins before kick off in city square so how does that encourage people to get into the stadium? The guy who sings bluemoon is utterly cringey and its impossible for fans to make any noise over wall of music from the tannoy system.

Agree with all this. Five mins before ok the South Stand was almost deserted. People think more of chucking a beer down their necks than the game. And yes the on pitch singer needs to go. Dear me.

Take no notice. 'Oakie' is short for 'Old creaky knees'. He can't do the stand up sit down thing any more.

Don't blame them tbh no point in even trying to any noise as the PA system would just drown them out anyway. Will be the same against Barce sadly.

But does this extend to all supporters just because they can`t be arsed in standing to celebrate a goal ? Yes I agree that the whole idea of being passionate is on the decline,as I remember what it was like in the 1960/70`s,when I was a mere slip of a lad.The Kippax (of which I was regular) was fantastic way back then, but was that down to my teenage exuberance ?
Personally I dont think that TV has helped,as there is far too much shown, but thats for another topic. However with not travelling to away games and subsequently watching the games live,in my local, the atmosphere is great, mainly due to the fact that we have both lots of Scousers and Rags with the odd Villa and Gooner fan spouting out occasionally.
I`ve said it before mate, but us old `uns have been there, seen it,got the t-shirt etc,so perhaps the problem lies with the youngsters who should try and create something.
The Poznan certainly was a great help in creating something special. We need to find something new and different to create a better stadium feel.
Personally I didn`t think the atmosphere was as bad last night as people are saying.

-- Tue Feb 04, 2014 4:12 pm --

Hahahaaa.Thats it mock a fooking crippled ****. ;)

The thing that took the sting out of the atmosphere last night for me was the sudden, unexpected loss of one of our best players right before the game. I was bang up for it for ages but when I was in the pub and saw the teamsheets I knew we were gonna find it hard. Took the wind out of my sails big time. Not that I'm saying I won't be up for it if we look like we're gonna lose - that often makes me up for it more, but to have the legs swepts unexpectedly from beneath you right before the game probably took it out of a lot of people. I was up for making it a big atmosphere and to give it to mourinho but I think most people knew he was gonna have the last laugh with this one

We need blocks where 'everybody' who is in there has to sing....not stood arms folded, it's becoming a joke, if you're in the designated singing sections well effin well sing!
In 119 as always which isn't bad to be fair but 109/110/111 need to get their arses into gear as they have gone backwards....if you don't want to sing move elsewhere....

Got to admit I was stood on the concourse and saw the team on the screen about half an hour before kick off and felt gutted. Kept going on to myself fucks sake...for fucks sake...fucking Demechelis in midfield....what the fuck....fuckety fuck.....fuck off Mourinho.... And the wife just looked at me and kept saying calm the fuck down will you to which I replied you've got no fucking idea have you?

Still we should have been Fernandinho from the stands and intimidated the fuckers,we'd have done it if it was the Rags we were playing last night.

Personally I didn`t think the atmosphere was as bad last night as people are saying.

Which is difficult when they are being brought up with live bands playing music in the city square 10 mins before kick off, and then walk into the stadium to listen to some dodgy singer singing 'bluemoon'.

Have the bands on earlier, and get the people in the stadium earlier. Reduce the price of beer in the ground and have people singing on the concourses.

The Poznan was great, and there is no reason why this can't be brought back (I know there have been numerous threads about this on here in the past), but it got everyone going and at least generated some sort of atmosphere.

Manchester music before the games and people in earlier. None of this NFL pre match entertainment (Which came from Cook). Have the entertainment at city square fair enough, but let it finish about 45 mins before the start of the game so fans can get in earlier.

Also, different kick off times do not help to suit TV, as people have other commitments (work etc) so this also contributes to a lack of atmosphere at times.

Don't see the problem really. Atmosphere was fine for me, although obviously a bit of a downer to concede first and not really look like scoring ourselves.

only blame the "johny come latelys" when all of us who have been going for years give it plenty - yet again the majority were not last night
