The lack of representation in rock music.

Reading this thread you'd think if it wasn't for old black men sat on front porches in the deep south singing the blues music wouldn't have moved on.

It would have and we would have still found our way to one direction sooner or later.

I'd say that without a doubt they have influenced music (All music influences other music) but that's as far as it goes.

Hendrix, living Colour, Kravitz, Prince, Kings X, to name but a few. Check out a New York organisation called Black Rock Coalition. Did a great compilation album in early nineties. Pulled together by Vernon Reid (Living Colour). The site gives a great run down of the history of black rock music and the influence of black culture.

Bands with black musicians include Threshold, Dave Mathews Band, Stress, various rap metal cross over acts. The Brazillian metal scene is quite healthy including Sepultra.... .

Rock music is essentially dead, I'm a massive rock fan but the sole reason for it being on its arse is the bands these days are just no good! I mean you can pop at cowell at how he's ruining the charts but it's safe to say there's nothing there to stop him. Because bands these days have nothing to offer the kids.
And in some respects rock is as bad as pop music in the sense that a trendsetter comes along and immediately you get a million of similar bands all quickly get signed to the record companies in a rush to make as much money as possible. They end up destroying it. It happened with Rock n roll, the Brit invasion, classic bands of the late 60s/ early70's, punk, new wave, cock rock, grunge, britpop, nu metal, the dog shit that the strokes started off. And I think by the time the arctic monkeys/libertines era it went full pelt on par with the X factor. Look at the hundreds of Bands from 10 years ago, all the. Indie/rock landfill, kaiser/killer/hard-if crap! The emo bands that appealed to the teen girls.!. They Had nothing to say, a few alright tunes but nothing to stop you in your tracks. Essentially boy bands with guitars. and it's been dead on its arse since.

I'd agree now that the iPod generation and teens have a real eclectic tastes that span decades because it's so easily accessible to them. That's why Glastonbury has had to move with the times. And offer more eclectic line ups. Music is music to them. The cowell sales IMHO come from the Take That generation of women in their 30's and 40's who watch these programmes and buy the singles because they watched the show. And because most radio stations are payed to play Olly murs new single 400 times a day it's the norm for them.

So to sum genesis up here, mainstream rock music is dead! And it should stay that way for the time being. If you can be arsed go underground and leave the top 40 to the Saturday night couch dribblers.

Essentially Xfactor/chart listeners are like Rag fans. Just going for the easy option because it's easy and making a choice away from the norm would put you at risk for being thrown out of society.
