The Manager

I always like looking at the people who say things like "Mancini is bad in Europe", as it tags them as people who don't actually think about the game very much and recycle cliches into their own opinion.

There's no such thing as "bad in Europe". It's a cup competition. It's like saying someone is "bad in the FA Cup". This isn't the 1960s where we don't know anything about the opposition. For everybody who isn't a savant like Mourinho or has the best team ever like Pep, it's a bit of a crap shoot.
Alex Ferguson, who many consider to be the greatest manager in the history of the game, took 13 years to win it. Is he "bad in Europe"?
Of course you have a greater chance of winning with more quality but as last night shown, the margins between success and failure are extraordinary thin.

Mancinis European record is fine. Knocked out last year in a group of death. Quarter finals with Inter twice, once getting knocked out by the eventual winners and once getting knocked out by a dodgy ref call. The idea that because a 47 year old manager hasn't won the Champions League means he's bad in Europe is laughable

His City team's performance level has so far been a lot worse in Europe than in the domestic competitions & some of his selections have been optimistic at best & verging on the bizarre.

For City, Mancini has so far been poor in Europe.

You know, just because YOU don't understand the reason for something doesn't mean that there isn't one.

And Mancinis record in Europe for City is fine. I'd wager the problem here is in expectation level.

Just because there is a reason doesn't mean it was the right choice.

I'd be very worried indeed if he did stuff for no reason.

Imo, City have been excellent at domestic level & poor in Europe. Often losing to or struggling against inferior teams. Some of that, imo, is down to Mancini's choices turning out to be wrong.

It's the latest 'in' stick to beat Mancini with.

They are running out of 'go to' excuses.

First it was Mancini was too defensive, we play with three holding midfielders.

Followed by Mancini and City won't ever win anything.

Then, Mancini only won the titles with Inter because of the match fixing probe.

Ah, he might of won the FA Cup but the Premier League is a different matter...

Now it's a moot European record, it bollocks.

And like all of the above, eventually, the critics will have to pull another excuse out of the bag.

Even Sheikh Mansour is not spared the rod.

First, it's a rich man's plaything, then he will get bored.

New £200m training facility, how many young players are going to actually make it past City's star-studded squad?

And how many Beswick locals will really benefit?

If I didn't know any better, I would start to think they really do care about our future well-being, they seem quick to want to tell us and Mancini where we are going wrong!!

Lots of wisdon here ! Some will look for one thing after another go have a go at the players and the manager. As someone said earlier in the thread - perhaps there is an issue with some fans expectations.

Europe will come in time - just like the FA Cup and PL title did. Also, we won't win silverware every year ! That's going to be hard for some on here to accept.

I'm going to disagree with TH and Damocles on this one. I do think Mancini's European record isn't very good. I'm not even talking about his Inter record, just his record since he's come to us. Twice we've dumped out of the EUROPA league by inferior opposition whilst fielding far superior teams to them, and as much as we were unlucky in some peoples eyes last season because we collected 10 points - the three against Bayern were when there was nothing to play for for them and they'd fielded a weakened team.

Overall it's not about going out and winning the competition every year, it's about giving a real good account of yourself. I think we've failed to do that every time we've had a crucial game.
