When I saw waspish's comments to that effect, I was reminded of my own in the tennis thread that Raducanu will never win another major.

I can confidently predict that she'll never win another major, whereas in Rory's case, whilst I can see that he has some demons at Augusta, he is a bloody good player year after year and I can easily see him winning one.

You'd have thought so, but his last major is now over 10 years ago. No matter how mentally strong you are there's clearly demons there now.

If you'd said back in 2014 that he wouldn't win another major you'd have been laughed at, but now it is a distinct possibility. I'm sure most thought he'd end up with double figures of majors at one stage. He's starting to remind me a bit of Greg Norman in terms of converting talent to major triumphs.

What is he now, 35? Easily another 10 years of being a competitive player, so that would make ~40 more chances at one of the majors. Obviously 10 years without one is ridiculous, but he still gives himself chances and he continues to win big events away from the majors. If he wins another relatively soon, I would argue a few more may follow.

I do agree that if he breaks his duck more are likely to follow and I genuinely hope he does get over the line. My concern is that there are that many great players these days that those mental scars and niggling self-doubts are a huge obstacle for him to overcome. The trouble with golf is that you have 4 days of dealing with all of this whilst competing unlike most sports that are over within a couple of hours.

It certainly seems to be a mental block he has at this stage, the failure to win a Masters. How many Masters tournaments has he been in now; 15-20, at a guess? Whatever we think of him for his footballing allegiances, he's clearly an excellent golfer. You don't earn over $100m in you career without being able to tell one end of your niblick from the other. And he was in good form in the run up to this week. He shouldn't be 7 shots behind someone like Rose, after one round.

That's true for golf generally . . . but not the Masters. Small field and 20%+ have no chance whatsoever (amateurs, older former champions, many though not all LIVers who are just coasting).

While Lee Trevino is the best player never to win it (and he played a fade; Augusta National requires a draw), Rory is arguably the second best player ever to never win it, along with perhaps Ernie Els.

It's a big hole in his resume, and a tournament he should absolutely have won by now given his relative talent.

He was very unlucky on the first one. Second one was dumb though.

I wouldn’t write him off yet though, before that he was playing the best golf of anyone I saw yesterday including Rose.

I didn't think he was unlucky on the first one. He committed a cardinal sin on his 3rd -- you never try to knock that chip from behind the green close when the pin is on that front ridge on 15 because one foot past it and its in the water. You keep it short of the pin for an uphill putt, take your par (or maybe even drain it for birdie) and move on.

I won't write him off either though. But you HAVE to be on defense on that course when things don't go as planned.

Talk about unlucky -- how about Matsuyama on 13? Approach hits the pin and goes into the creek.

I meant more with the four iron than the chip, that would have been putting for an eagle earlier in the day.

Agree about Matsuyama.
 
Rose giving himself all sorts of problems so far, yet still gained a shot!

Needs to get his tee shot sorted out though or it could unravel quickly
