The Mrs - Blood Results

This is a useful website aimed at the general public which gives an background explanation of common blood tests

Hope this helps.

Headaches like most illnesses can be divided into primary and secondary causes.

Primary, which is what I suspect you fear, would mean something actually wrong in the head..this would need an MRI scan to confirm or otherwise. Blood tests would not directly show a tumour in the head. A high ESR could mean temporal arteritis, but believe me if it came back high with relevant symptoms you should be called immediately and started on steroids as blindness may ensue. Migraines starting in an older person, over 40, who has never had them before, should be investigated properly. Let me just say this is the least likely cause.

Secondary. This means the headaches are secondary to something else, and frankly that could be anything, but with an 8 day wait, it is not likely to be serious. Remember that GPs have an obligation to act rapidly and refer within 14 days if something serious is suspected.

Headaches are very common for a GP. Most of the time nothing serious, from dehydration, stress, to referred pain from a bad neck. Worth getting eyes checked if migraines have visual disturbances. High blood pressure can present with headaches but again not that common unless very high. Bottom line is it sounds ok but worth getting checked out properly.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all the replies.

She had her call this morning and has been told her results showed potentially fatty liver, and has been referred for a scan and maybe a biopsy. Not sure what to think of it.

I had a raised LFT last year. (Liver function test).
Apparently there was fat around my liver.
No scans or anything, the doctor suggested I lose weight, I was 82 kg, I lost 10kg in 3 months, had another test and all was well.
If your wife is overweight, maybe suggest she lose a few kilos.

I know a couple of blokes that had this. Were told to knock the wine on the head, get exercising and clean the diet up. If they thought it was anything more untowards she'd currently being having her scan and biopsy. Fingers crossed for you both pal. Positive thoughts!

Things you can do if you have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the main way of managing NAFLD.

For example, it can help to:

  • lose weight – you should aim for a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 (use the BMI calculator to work out your BMI); losing more than 10% of your weight can remove some fat from the liver and improve NASH if you have it
  • eat a healthy diet – try to have a balanced diet high in fruits, vegetables, protein and carbohydrates, but low in fat, sugar and salt; eating smaller portions of food can help, too
  • exercise regularly – aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, such as walking or cycling, a week; all types of exercise can help improve NAFLD, even if you do not lose weight
  • stop smoking – if you smoke, stopping can help reduce your risk of problems such as heart attacks and strokes
NAFLD is not caused by alcohol, but drinking may make it worse. It's therefore advisable to cut down or stop drinking alcohol.

I had the same results from a blood test about five years ago. Doctor on a Friday morning said someone will be in touch with me to sort out a scan. I got a phone call on the Sunday to tell me they had an appointment for me on the Monday afternoon. As soon as i put the phone down, i shit it. I was thinking something must be really wrong with me. Anyway it turned out there was nothing wrong with me and the appointment was only so quick, because someone had cancelled there appointment on the Sunday morning and they were just phoning round trying to fill the slot up. Hopefully be the same for your wife. Its just an ultrasound scan.
