The Mrs - Blood Results

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all the replies.

She had her call this morning and has been told her results showed potentially fatty liver, and has been referred for a scan and maybe a biopsy. Not sure what to think of it.
Ah, my friend got diagnosed with that about 5 years ago! She'll be asked to watch her diet and they'll analyse her a bit more going forwards, just to see if she improves or worsens. In my opinion, it would be a massive stretch to go for a biopsy in this situation. If things get worse in six months, definitely call for a biopsy, but no need to do a biopsy now when it's something that can be controlled by a few minor lifestyle changes.

(Btw, I've had a liver biopsy - I was being checked for glycogen storage disease, and my liver enzyme scores were also off the charts despite being 25 at the time and never drinking a drop of booze in my life. It's not an easy procedure but it's alright. It's a local anaesthetic procedure and I was able to go home the same day. They wheel you in, numb your side, do some scalpel work (which you can't feel at all), then they stick a tube in your side, you feel a sudden clamp internally, and then it's over. They have about 2/3 technicians talking you through it all. Then you have to lie very still on your back for an hour so the wound heals properly. Then you can get up and leave. Had a bit of pain in my ribs for a couple of days after but nothing that stopped me from going to work, etc.)

Shes slightly overweight, she's a 12/14, wants to get down to a 10 again. I wouldnt describe her as overweight personally but maybe a BMI test would (shes about 12 stone, and 5'8")

BMI tests are pretty pointless unless your severely obese or a skeleton. She can be 12 stone without any fat on her and her BMI would still read the same. Hope they get to bottom of it soon for her mate, you’re all due some luck.

Thanks for this, really helpful

Oh, also @TINY, your wife's weight isn't necessarily always going to be an indicator of her having fatty liver disease. There's quite often a correlation between the two but it's not always the cause. My mate was diagnosed with fatty liver in 2013 (or maybe 2014) when he was 6ft tall and about 12st. His BMI was within range but there he was, stamped with a "fatty liver" diagnosis all the same.

Haha.. I'd like to see you say that to my cardiologist.

Ask your cardiologist how accurate BMI is. Mike Tyson would have measured as clinically obese on the BMI scale at 5ft 10in and 15stone 10+ Lbs that he regularly weighed in at.

Obviously your cardiologist can look at you and make an educated assessment and we can generally tell if we’re carrying a bit too much lard. As the special K ad said, if you can pinch more than an inch you might want to lose a bit.

Erm...think Tyson is a bit of an exception haha.
The BMI is a general guide, a useful tool to use to gauge the average person's height to weight ratio.
Some people lie outside it's remit, Tyson or Peter Crouch for example.
My cardiologist mentions it a lot.
With my artificial aortic heart valve he stresses how important it is for me to keep within my BMI.

If I told him metalblue off Bluemoon says it's crap I'm sure he would take some notice.

BMI doesn’t measure how much excess fat you have. Or even take account of bone density etc. So whilst your cardiologist can look at you and say with a degree of certainty it’s an ok indicator for you (he can see if you carry fat or muscle), it isn’t a reliable measure for someone you’ve not met which was my point really when used in the context of Tinys Mrs. She might be a proper gym bunny, a couch potato, or something in between.

Anyroad you do you mate, I don’t want to derail this thread.
