Even Clarkson and May admitted that the format was getting a bit tired and was probably nearing the end of its current format. So rather than reinvent it, they decided to pretty much keep everything identical, and obviously did a worse job of it, as you'd expect.

Did anyone else get really annoyed by how the presenters clap when the audience is clapping? What's that about?

well they don't always film the segments in order so I guess it's a way of getting the audience to follow the lead to the desired effect for putting it together in TV format.
