The official EDS and academy thread 2011/12

Vital Crewe:

It would appear that stories yesterday suggesting that Dan Smith had failed a medical at Manchester City were wide of the mark.

Vital Crewe now understands that Smith himself has stalled the move as he evaluates his options and decides what is the best move for him. Hopefully he will follow the likes of Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton, Nick Powell and Max Clayton in staying-on at Crewe despite interest from elsewhere, rather than replicating the decisions made by Eddie Johnson (now at Portland Timbers in the MLS) and Ben Marshall (Leicester City).

Can't really blame him given the amount of English academy talent that has made it at our club in recent years... none to be precise for a long time (Johnson being the last and he'd probably still be in the first team squad if not for his injuries). But that said, if he is very impressive I'm sure our club would love to give English youth players a chance. Suarez, Rekik, Razak, Guidetti all have a good chance here for the sole reason that they're very talented, if an English kid can be the same then he too will have a chance.

Or maybe he has seen the competition in the academy and EDS and thought better otherwise?

On this Crewe forum someone reckons he got messed around a bit "by Platty and City" and now another Premier League team might get him.

Heard some weeks back that the family were hacked off with Platty & City messing around. So City were rules out at that time. But Dan still wanted to leave & other Prem clubs were in the frame

at the end of the day, if City wanted him, he would come. If City have messed them about then it seems they don't want him that much. Always seemed to me a move to stop others from getting him and if he turns out to be good we win and if he doesn't we sell him for what we paid for him and we win again.

Manchester City Pair Sign

Pompey have signed two Manchester City youngsters on loan for a month, subject to Premier League clearance.

Forward Luca Scapuzzi and central defender Karim Rekik both come highly rated from Roberto Mancini’s title chasers.

Rekik, 17, joined City in the summer after coming through the youth system at Feyenoord.

The defender was an integral part of the Dutch side that won the UEFA European under-17 Championship last May.

Rekik skippered his country in the under-17 World Cup in Mexico last summer. He has made two appearances for City, both in the League Cup.

Scapuzzi, 20, joined City from Italian side Portogruaro last summer, signing a three-year deal.

A youth player with AC Milan, Scapuzzi has made two appearances for City and nine for Oldham, where he was on loan earlier this season.

Blues boss Michael Appleton said: “Karim can play at left-back or as a left-sided centre half. He’s comfortable on the ball and has the right temperament to be at a club like Manchester City.

“Luca is a good footballer who can play out wide or up front. He’s already got Football League experience having been on loan at Oldham.

“We’ve been aware of both of them for ages. I know Brian Kidd very well, while Stuart Gray is good friends with David Platt.”

Meanwhile, Scott Allan has extended his loan spell from West Brom for another 28 days.

Portsmouth hardly have any players, so should get some game time.

Great for Rekik and such an early age.

NEC have sent Abdisalam Ibrahim back to Manchester City early after a disappointing loan spell with the Eredivisie club.

Ibrahim moved to Nijmegen on a season-long deal last summer in the hope of playing regularly, but he has struggled to hold down a starting role.

Having made just eight appearances and scored one goal for NEC, the 20-year-old midfielder has now made a premature return to his parent club.

Technical director Carlos Aalbers told NEC's official website: "Abdisalem had it difficult in his role as a reserve.

"It was therefore better for everyone that he would return to Manchester City to get his career back on track."

That's a shame but it has been clear for a while that Ibrahim hasn't progressed at all and will probably be released/sold for cheap soon. Last time I saw him was for Norway U21 vs. England U21 last year and he was unimpressive.

And the mystery team is Liverpool:

Liverpool are trying to steal away Crewe wonderkid Dan Smith after his move to Manchester City hit a stumbling block.

Roberto Mancini had agreed a £300,000 fee for the 16-year-old midfielder after a year trying to lure him to the Etihad Stadium.

But the move is on hold for a medical and that has alerted Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool.

They are now hoping to grab Smith and restore a once profitable link-up with the Alex.

ive heard great things about rekik and cant wait to see what he can do at portsmouth, how long do people think it will be before he is consistently with the first team?

I think there is a big clear out coming this summer regarding youth players. Some have done well on loan but not showed enough to be part of a 25 man squad competing for the league and Champions League.

I think the following will be off;

Ibrahim
Cunningham
McGivern
Benali
Tse
Nielsen

There is no guarantee that Weiss although he has had a great season at Espanyol will be given another shot either.
Abu is worrying as he has not had a game at Frankfurt since moving there after going to ACON after impressing in Norway.

Wabara is another that could maybe get sold like Mee/Trippier last season or maybe given another year.

Ruthless at our level now. Only the finest will survive.
