The official EDS and academy thread 2011/12

On top of us signing Smith for £300k (if this medical thing is cleared up), Crewe could be losing Nick Powell to Chelsea for... up to £5million (!!!) according to the Express. I've seen both Powell and Clayton from Crewe for England and was very impressed, especially Powell who scores a lot of goals coming from midfield. Dario Gradi deserves a lot of credit for his work at Crewe as does whoever oversees Southampton's youth academy who have produced Bale, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Walcott in recent years and are now said to have the next great English left-back Luke Shaw if you believe the hype (Arsenal still haven't signed him though despite being the favourites). I hope we can produce some high quality English/British players soon, been a while since we've had one who even looks close to breaking through, the foreign ones are the standout players of late.

Is Hiwula a legitimate prospect? Seems to score in every game he plays in.

Hiwula has been immense for the under 18's this season, even played and scored in the EDS. He is 17 born in Manchester, I think he will be a top player in years to come.

Vital Crewe:

It would appear that stories yesterday suggesting that Dan Smith had failed a medical at Manchester City were wide of the mark.

Vital Crewe now understands that Smith himself has stalled the move as he evaluates his options and decides what is the best move for him. Hopefully he will follow the likes of Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton, Nick Powell and Max Clayton in staying-on at Crewe despite interest from elsewhere, rather than replicating the decisions made by Eddie Johnson (now at Portland Timbers in the MLS) and Ben Marshall (Leicester City).

Can't really blame him given the amount of English academy talent that has made it at our club in recent years... none to be precise for a long time (Johnson being the last and he'd probably still be in the first team squad if not for his injuries). But that said, if he is very impressive I'm sure our club would love to give English youth players a chance. Suarez, Rekik, Razak, Guidetti all have a good chance here for the sole reason that they're very talented, if an English kid can be the same then he too will have a chance.

Ben Marshall scored that cracker against Chelsea on the Weekend...? So how has leaving for them stalled his career?

Reading that forum, they're a bit deluded in thinking Crewe is the best place to develop... There's only so much 'developing' you can do at lower league level.

Look at Hart, yes he was Keeper of the Year in League 2... But it was at us and experience at Birmingham that got him to England number 1, and potentially one of the best keeper's in the world.

Scapuzzi and Rekik to Portsmouth on loan! Shows what a talent Rekik is that he's going out on loan aged barely 17.
