The official EDS and academy thread 2011/12

Just been tonite.

Totally outplayed.
Can anyone tell me why we don't play the same system as the first first team.
I thought Suarez was poor but could see him being better if we played a system as first team.
Celtic number 8 and 10 were good.

Mancini - ohhh said:
Our youth team is just not as good as we think it is!! Thats the fact and yet still people dig into Mancini for not giving the youth a chance..

Do people really have a go that he doesnt give youth a chance. Not those who watch the EDS and academy sides I bet.

Tonight though was a bad day at the office and possibly the worst I have seen the EDS team play. And it follows having a training session directly with Mancini last week :)

Did Suarez get the second? My mistake then.

Does anyone know of any tactical differences between the U18 side that is top of the league and the NextGen side that has many of the same players plus a few others? They have different managers and I'm wondering if they are set up the same at the moment.

Tonight City set up with a 4.2.3.1 system. The 2 central (holding) players being Clowes and Huws. They both play for the 18's as well.

Harry Bunn is up top for the EDS (Hiwula or Cole play there for the 18's) The 3 behind Bunn tonight were Roman,Suarez and Henshall. Suarez and Henshall also play in the under 18's

So to a large extent it's the same system for both teams and a lot of the same players. But I would say there is a marked difference in the standard of the opposition from 18's level to EDS.The EDS is quicker and stronger and just better.

Also defensively tonight we had Gunn in nets( he is 15 or maybe 16) with Meppen Walters ,Rekik and Plummer all of whom play 18' as well. Veseli was the other one and I am not sure of his age but I havent seen him play 18's this season.

If it's the same for these two teams are they trying to play like the first team? Possibly yes but with a massively lower level of talent trying to achieve it.They are still young I know but need to work endlessly on their first touch and their movement off the ball both of which seem quite poor to me.

Dismal display in appaling weather conditions, I note we have appointed a new fitness coach to you team, a spaniard and on tonights display and the previous results I would expect a major shake up if we are to be dependant upon youth development to satisfy financial fair play.
Defence was shocking, Karim was appaling for first goal, had plenty of chance to clear and the 15 year old goalie has been dropped in deep end when clearly not ready.

I was also there tonight, just got home through the wind and the rain!! Celtic totally outplayed us and our defence was abysmal. The error for Celtic's first goal was worthy of an 11 year old!!. They were not talking to each other and are definitely not as aware of what is going on around them as Celtic were.

The Suarez goal was good but there wasn't one player, apart from maybe our number 18, who could have been named MOTM.

Mind you those playing conditions were atrocious, it was really funny when a lot of the people in the front rows of the seated section moved back to get out of the torrential rain and wind. Luckily most of them managed to find a seat elsewhere. (Yes they remained seated and without any stewards, amazing really!!! :-))

Celtic supporters were much more vocal than the City supporters and moved from behind one set of goals to the other set after half time.

Looks like it's a team that haven't grown up together and don't train together regularly.

The team spans 4 age groups, this cannot be good.

What do the players do when we are out? Do they have other games to play? Particularly those that are over 18?

At the moment, nothing for the over 18s (U18s will continue to play in the academy league). Friendlies would have to be arranged or they would have to go on loan in the January window or the February-March loan window. Poor Gai Assulin has had fook all to do since the preseason friendlies, too old for NextGen and not in first team plans.

We missed a Razak like player tonight, they carved us open every time. Think Rekik is still finding his feet as he can be great one game and ropey the next.

I thought Suarez and Roman linked up well tonight, but we pushed too high up which left the hole in the middle and Celtic slaughtered us from that space (like with the third and fourth goals).

Henshall was a lonely figure tonight and we didn't utilise him at all, same happened against Barca. We seem to go through the middle a hell of a lot at this level which is understandable with Roman and Suarez in the same side, but I think if we had a wide option we need to bring him into the game too for some variety.

Henshall is a one trick pony and the trick ( his pace) isn't that good when he comes up against a quick defender.I agree we pushed too high up though which meant our front players were really tightly marked and couldnt be found with a pass. That and the poor movement meant we were totally ineffective most of the time.

Suarez and Roman linked up better in the 2nd half but apart from a great goal to make it 2.3 it didnt amount to much.

I think that the Andy Walsh and co. are making a pigs ear of the U18/EDS setup. They've pulled out of the Reserve League where they can get the young lads regular competitive games and yet throw a group together from both sets (U18 and EDS) for the NextGen series when they don't play together any other time. All the weaknesses were there for all to see tonight.

Get back in the Reserve League and get the likes of Helan, Roman, Suarez, Bunn, and Razak etc playing regularly. What's going to happen to likes off Assulin as he's too old for the NextGen series and therefore there are no teams that he can get regular football to possibly have any chance of getting into the first team squad!

Sort it out.

Couldn't agree more ^^^^

It's a marketing ploy at the expense of the young players' development.

Well in his defence I think it would be hard to balance NextGen, EDS/reserve league, and U18s this year because we have moved on many of our older youngsters and the NextGen team is heavily made up of U18s. I don't think if we could make up two teams for the U18s and reserves right now unless we started putting players like Bridge and Onuoha in as other clubs do with older players.

The over-age players at the club who would be reserve league only and aren't out on loan are I believe Bunn, Assulin, Roman, Cunningham, Razak (but Mancini keeps him with first team), Tse, Scapuzzi, Veseli, Mancini, and Chantler. The rest would be playing for the U18s with the possible exception of Rekik and Suarez (Meppen-Walter too maybe?) who might both be permanently promoted to the reserve team but that still isn't enough players to make a reserve squad. And we have Wabara, Ibrahim, Abu, Helan, McGivern, and others out on loan which is probably better for their development.

I wish I fully understood the decisions taken as it does seem a few are getting little playing time. But the reason for poor performances like tonight isn't because they don't play/train together as basically most of them do.

The Assulin one baffles me. He has a lot of quality and for him to not be playing at some level just seems wrong.Maybe something will happen very soon and similarly for Cunningham and Chantler who could easily do a job for a club somewhere.

Every time I've seen Assulin he has looked quality when he has the ball, against the England U21s opposite a lot of Premier League players he got the ball and set up a goal - he was quiet because they bypassed midfield a lot with long balls but when he got the ball he had undoubted quality. His main flaw is that maybe he doesn't get himself involved enough yet the same can be said about Adam Johnson at first team level.

I trust Mancini but am also baffled on this - he didn't even get in the Carling Cup matchday squad yet 17-year-old Suarez did. Now Suarez is going to be really special but Assulin at this moment in time is more ready for senior level football. We had three or four clubs interested in loaning Assulin yet here he is still, something doesn't make sense to keep him here playing no football if Mancini doesn't want to use him.

I've just had my match report for the Celtic game published on The Bleacher Report is anyone fancies a look:

Yeah,

Didnt turn up last night, thought the passing was awful. How many passes does it take to switch a ball? maybe had something to do with the wind.

At time it was like watching rugby, 4,5 passes to get the ball switched.

Like what has been said, get bk to the reserve setup.

Heard something about a reserve game today behind closed doors against Carlisle but don't know where or exactly when!

Anyone know anything?
