I think it was because he was in Liverpool

Correct. People reading way too much into it. He was simply pointing out that vermin fans don't always receive a particularly warm welcome on Murkyside. The world and their dog knew he was a rag, so it's no big deal really. It's the same as when Liam and Noel started sing ''who the fuck are m** u*****'' on stage.
