The penalty incident last night (Silva)

It's pretty simple, you don't have to book a player for diving just because you adjudged there to be no foul.

The "get up" gesture doesn't mean Clattenburg thinks Silva dived, just that he thinks there was no foul.

Contact happens all the time, referees gesture for a player to get up all the time, it's not indicative that someone's dived.

I could accept this if it wasn’t for two little issues;

1. How often are these given? - the ref was very well placed and all analysis comes to the conclusion that there was contact in the box, it did cause Silva to go down and therefore was a penalty. So why didn’t he give it - mistake? Maybe.

2. Clattenberg did EXACTLY the same thing when Richards was clattered in the box at Old Trafford - same actions by Clattenberg, same outcome. Are we just unlucky with his bad decisions, or does he just not like giving us penalties?

I think it boils down to Clattenberg being basically inept and the ‘establishment’, of which he is a part, not liking what we are or have become.

Yes but Clatten-whatever should know which players are divers (honestly Balo does a bit here and there) and which are not and really graft to keep possession, aka Silva.

But that's asking an official to go into games with pre-conceived ideas on who WILL dive, and that's not good for the game. An official should go into the game with a clean slate for all, not with a pre-formed plan.

It would be nice if players weren't cheats full stop, then these officials might stand half a chance of doing a game without being pariahs every week.

Every ref in the world, from the best of them to the absolute shittest, who reffed with Messi in the game know that if he drops 99% of the time its cos he was fouled as Messi doesn't dive. Understanding players and knowing how they are is part of being a ref, otherwise what's the point of the human element of a ref. If he is to go into a gam with no understanding then we should introduce more referees and replay technology to referee games like they do in the NFL. At least no matter what happens, you will get 99% of the time, a complete fair result which nobody, like us today, can debate of argue about.

But nope, the establishment wants to keep tranditional refs, which is fine, but they really need to be consistent. I bet Clatten had a feeling it should have been a Pen for Silva, but for Lescott who granted has his hands raised, was turning his body away from the ball and his hands as he dropped, he should have stayed consistent IMO.

In any case, if we wanna win the title and be one of the best in the world, then we are gonna have to forget about games with bad refereeing, take on shit refs like Clatten all season long and just not give refs any excuses.

Maybe someone would be better explaining why the fuck Silva didn't shoot?

He had an open shot on goal.

I thought this when watching it back. Look at the Bayern game, no thought, he just smashed it and it went in. He's pretty lethal from 18 yards and really didn't need that touch but I wouldn't drop him for the Arsenal game.

Hell No!! never drop the man! I think he's very tactical in his passing and prefers to get the perfect assist than go for goal like a striker. I watched the Bayern replay and he actually went off the pitch on to the sidelines really pissed off with a tackle someone did on him and when he came back, he just ran towards centre and went for goal.

But merlin is defo lethal with accuracy from range and he should go for it more often!

Can someone explain to me why, if Mark Clattenburg DOESNT think that is a penalty on David Silva, and gestures to him to get up, he doesn't book him for diving?

Decisions that really really don't make sense!

he might have thought that Silva sliped, tripped himself up, was tackled? there are numerous reason as to why!

Just because a play ends up on his arse in the penalty area, it dosent mean that the ref has to give a decision for or against the striker!

by the way I know it was a blantant penalty, I'm just saying it might not be the conspiricy everyone is making out (and making us look very bitter)!

Blatant penalty but I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theory either. Clattenberg is just a shite referee. Maybe his talents lie somewhere else but not in refereeing. Just seems strange that he is employed to do so. I'm shit at DIY so no matter how hard I try, I'll never make it as a joiner. Or maybe I will; Clattenberg can be my inspiration.

Enough said end of thread. The guy is a clown. Probably got the penalty right for them and the cliche sending off right, but every game he gets a major decision wrong. He's just not good enough. Don't think he's against us, he's just not a very good referee.

24 hours earlier, Chris Foy did the same with Modric for Spurs.
Shit happens. Frequently! Get over it.

Time for Merlin to take a breather and give Nasri his chance.

He was awful last night.

He did have once he sold the dummy but was tripped. He was pretty annonymous last night.
