The positive and sensible thread

Reading the comments since Sunday and, if I am honest, examining my own response, highlights how far we still have to go, both fans and players, before we start to realise our ambitions; that we are going to be one of the biggest football clubs in the world.

The last two matches have been against teams for whom this was, literally and metaphorically, their cup finals. The team just about managed it at Wembley and almost repeated that on Sunday. What they did in both games was to start in a manner that suggested they believed they would win regardless of how much effort they actually put in. This is a valuable lesson for the next time.

This is where I take exception with some of the fans reactions (and my own), we cannot treat every important game the same, some will, inevitably, have greater importance. The manager recognises this and so should we. We will be in the mix for the domestic cups every season now, there is no doubt about that. We won one this year, should have done last year and probably will next. That is not arrogance, that is our stated intent, and has to be our aim. We will be vying for the title next year, as we are this year, as we have been the past 2 seasons. The Champions League will take longer but we will be in the final in the next 3 seasons.

This will involve a change in some of the players. Some will be replaced, some will understand how much more they need to do mentally and physically and will adapt accordingly. What won't change in the next 2 seasons is the manager, although he will adapt the way he works and will improve his selections and decisions.

As fans we need to encourage and support, as we have throughout my whole life of being a blue, whenever and wherever we can. We also need to criticize and castigate when the need arises. Two recent examples of which are first half Sunday and first half Capital cup. The positive is that the team responded on both occasions.

I am not trying to do the 'look where we've come from, be grateful' routine, we, as fans, deserve everything that is happening at this football club. so let's enjoy it, this season, next season and as long as it lasts and that includes getting beat now and again.

Except these players have shown a fundamental failure to learn from this particularly mistake. They often didn't perform against highly-motivated 'lesser' teams for Mancini and they've carried that right through to the new manager. Two very different managers with very different approaches, and the same disinterested, complacent attitude from too many of the players on too many occasions.

Spot on. We lack balls, for want of a better word. We certainly lack leaders. Kompany and Zaba, that's it.

I agree, some players will learn others will be replaced. I think Nasri has surprised me by his desire in the last two games, quite a contrast with Yaya. It isn't going to happen in one, two or even three seasons. There will be more games like the last two before we get to where we are going, and I daresay one or two after that.

The positive news is that when we field a team which includes 6 of the following 7 players we almost always win: Zabba, Vinny, YaYa, Ferna, Nasri, Silva, Aguero. The record of selections with at least 6 of them in is P14, W12, L1 (Chelsea away- no Vinny), D1 (Southampton away). GF 48 GA 15.
These teams have had results such as 4-1 v Utd, 6-3 v Arsenal, 5-1 at Spurs, 2-1 v Liverpool and 3-1 v Everton. They won the Capital 1 Cup Final.

The even more positive news is that they are all fit and if they can remain fit for just 12 more games they will carry us to glory. Believe!

Good thread. Count me in.

We need to keep our feet on the ground, while we aim for the stars.

Under Pelle I see all the players trying harder for the shirt, and trying to improve their standards.
Improving individually and together is rarely done in a straight line.

If we can accept Pelle's philosophy on how he respects the players, the staff, the fans, the opposition, and all. I believe that's why the squad is pulling in the same direction.

Realistically we need to accept there will be setbacks and expecting to win every game along the way is bound to lead to disappointment.

Keep it real, and stay positive ! Blue Army !!

Just to correct an earlier post, City players don't look "disinterested". They might (and do at times) look UNinterested.
"Disinterested" means "not acting for personal gain", or "altruistic". So a disinterested player would do something for others and not stand to gain from it himself.
A disinterested action is essentially unselfish.

I think leaving Vinnie and Zaba out at the same time is never a good move ... they drive the others on by example and have some urgency, whereas I'm afraid the likes of Lescott, Dzeko, Garcia and even Silva and Toure don't.

Not criticising Silva and Toure - they are incredible players - but you need someone who will drive the team on when things aren't going well, and really we only have Vinnie and Zaba who can be relied on to do that each week.

I completely agree. They are our corner stones, they have little flair, and finesse but what they do have is passion and complete winners attitude.

I admire Vinny when he throws a tantrum when he's done for a foul he doesn't believe is right, and I admire Zaba, who will run up and down the flank for 90 minutes and mostly only as a dummy run for Navas.

Milner is another one, he isn't no Silva, but when he's playing his enthusiasm rubs off. You need guts in this league and I'd start these 3 players every match if I was manager.

And half the people on here are about to go and spend 3 days in barcelona. Sun, drinking, singing and watching us beat Barcelona. Fuck Wigan and bring on Wednesday. I was gutted yesterday, but im now starting to get that Barcelona buzz.
That's the spirit mate, not going Weds but did go the friendly other year,i've rigged the tv up onto my roof for the up in the gods vibe, got a case of estrella up there and got some sand coming in the morning from local builders merchants

Considering all the doom and gloom around here since Saturday (and I feel it as well), it's worth noting that despite some less-than-perfect performances lately, if our two results against Chelsea had been the other way round things would be quite different. I know this is hypothetical, but it doesn't require us to change any results, or play any differently. If that had happened (and assuming we'd have beaten Villa at home, which in light of the Wigan result seems less of a given, but still...) the top of the Prem would look like this;

1. City played 27, points 63
2. Chelsea played 28, points 60
3. Liverpool played 28, points 59
4. Arsenal played 28, points 59

You're changing results in the two most important games of the season, wiping away Joe Hart/Nastasic's fuck up, assuming we had somehow got a second at Stamford Bridge when we never came close, and somehow got 2 goals at home to Chelsea when they looked much more likely having hit the woodwork 3 times.

Apart from that, you may have a point.

I probably don't post as much as the others but I do read a lot of stuff on here and I must say the shit that Pellegrini and the players have got since yesterday has been insane and unwarranted.

Now, I am not saying that there weren't any mistakes but calling for a new manager because we lost a game is just poor from a lot of us. The likes of United, Chelsea, Liverpool are already out and no manager is under pressure because of a loss in the FA cup. We are not Bayern Munich where we can expect to win all the domestic games.

Regarding tactics when Pelle chose 1 up top for Barca and then lost everyone said he should have gone 2 up top. When he lost with 2 everyone is saying 1 up top. Hindsight is always a good thing and the XI put out there yesterday would have beaten 9/10 times and unluckily it wasn't to be. I have read some very good posters calling him out and asking for a change and that has surprised me a lot. We scored 5 against Spurs nearly 1 month back and then we had an average month. Teams always have blips and its how we bounce back from them.

So my point of starting this thread is to keep all the negativity about the players and the manager out of this thread and have a good discussion on the team. There is nothing positive on this forum on the first page and I am sure the Chelsea, Arse and Rag fans would love to be in our situation. Hopefully on here, posters who are still positive about the team would sensibly discuss the positive of the games and the team and the mistakes without the "knee jerk" reaction and without the "I said so".

If there is another thread about the same, mods feel free to merge :).

P.S: Please no slagging players, manager or the team on here.

Excellent, I find that I don't bother reading for a day or two after we lose, the responses are usually childish & puerile, totally unworthy of a sensible forum. Keep the toys in the pram & support YOUR team #Together

I'm liking the positivity of this thread. We should keep it going and the doom and gloomers should respect it and ply their misery elsewhere. Onward and upward !

I really do believe Barca are due a humiliation, and we are the team that could do it. I'm talking a 4- 0 type scoreline. I know it seems unthinkable, and they, on their game, coud beat us by the same margin.

I feel with us out of the FA cup, everyone should be extra motivated and if we get a good start I do believe Barcelona will crumble.

What a message we could send.

I'm not changing the two league results, I'm switching the home league result for the home FA Cup result - sorry that wasn't clear.

Fuck pearce, bring back ball.

and me

fuck pearce an ball bringback frank clark or ron saunders

Would that be the same Ron Saunders who won the First Division title and the European Cup and a couple of League Cups AFTER he left City for Aston Villa. Not quite in the same league as Clark,Ball and Pearce. Another manager who wasn't given enough time to build a team.
He would know just how Pellegrini feels after watching City stars underperforming against inferior opposition as he was in charge when we screwed up in the League Cup final against Wolves.

We are going to beat Barcelona, will go through to the next round and no-one will begrudge Pellegrini his hotel bar bill.
