A better analogy would be the ant already has a nuclear bomb, and are you any more likely to step on it if it has an older nuclear bomb rather than a shiny new one.

20 billion quid more likely?

If there really is no difference between the old and the new one other than the new one being shiny then I agree, that would be a waste of money.

Theres little difference in deterrent. A nuke is a nuke is a nuke

There must be a good reason for upgrading though - MPs voted for renewal something like 400-60. Isn't it to do with the new ones taking time to produce and the old ones becoming inactive - you don't want to be left with a period where the UK has no nuclear deterrent. That's my understanding of the argument for renewal but this may be wrong...?

You really are the biggest WUM on the board - fair play

the country did stick to its guns. not wumming.

Either you are a 'wum' or you have the memory of a fish.. :) you post the same sentence (yet in a various combinations of words) all the time!

There is nobody in the world I know is more Tory than you.. cos you say it more than anyone :)

I am tory thinking rather than an out and out tory. I have a small business and vote for whoever can safeguard that. of course other business owners will vote how they see things but in 40 odd years of being in retail I have only ever struggled when labour were in power. if it was the other way round I would vote labour. I suppose I am tory in as much that I only care about myself and my staff and family. truth is though so are the cadgers and the idle. they don't Tories in power cos they know they have their number.

oh and for the benefit of clarity I was just as excited with the result as I was agueroooo. my business means far more to me than football. always has always will. without a business I can't do football. simples.

with this election i think the punters didnt see much difference in the two main partys so they stuck with what we all ready had even though they talk tough i dont think either party will change the imigration policy & leting any old tom ,dick & harry sign on when they get here ,neither party have said they will stop people from the eu claiming child benifits even though the kids never set foot in the uk .The benifit system is a way of life for some people & neither party has plans to stop it being so .how can some one be unemployed & be paid benifits for umpteen years ? it is beyond me & that wont change either

Quite worried about my tax arrangements now. I live in UK and work from the UK but pay all my tax in Australia where I've not stepped foot in for 5 years.

Am I going to jail?

You should be talking to a tax advisor. Might depend on whether you have a permanent home in Oz and who you're working for.

10 fire stations in London to close due to cut backs

This is clearly terrible news. But where does the money come from to keep paying for these? It would have to be borrowed but then do people expect that our children will be able to write it off? Money does not come from nowhere - somewhere down the line someone has to pay.

Sturgeon makes me laugh when she says we can't afford to continue austerity. The whole reason for austerity measures is because we can't afford things. If there was loads of money then cutbacks like the above would not be made. These decisions are not taken lightly.

Why don't we just shut everything down and pay off the debt then? Simples!

I don't remember making that reply :/ Must be me with the fish memory.

Fair dos though. I can't fully appreciate people having such responsibility (finding wages for their workers). Maybe you should try to look at the whole picture though? I'm not having a go - how can I? But I'm just saying there are other considerations. Just don't want the leader (whichever party they're from) to cut stuff that'll make people miserable. I hope your vote is vindicated and Cameron is lenient, and the pain is minimal.

I once had to make a similar decision between putting food in my fridge and my sky subscription. The hunger pangs were terrible but two and a half men helped me make it through. My business is going lot better since I sacked all my staff and stopped advertising too. Pity the premises burnt down and I'd stopped paying the insurance premium since it was going to come out of my take home.
