Does anyone remember this pub.? Demolished now.

Rover’s Return, yes it was apparently the inspiration for the pub in Corrie. Can't recall any Red Lion being there ...... Swan With Two Necks, yes ... and I think a Rovers Return once stood there too, near Withy Grove..

I’m talking late 60’s. Presumably it disappeared with the general ‘ development’ of the area. There’s been a few pubs lost on Withy Grove/ Shudehill and that general area over the last few decades. I don’t remember any of them being called the Red Lion though. I’m not quite an FOC yet, so maybe before my time?
i know the Swan with two necks. It was past that down hill on the left in a little square where they had a little chicken market occasionally. I know it sold Watneys red barrel and had small dart room ( Manchester board) .Can't recall any Red Lion being there ...... There was definitely a Willie Lees pub near the bus station ... I know that only too well as i had a few sherbert lemons too many one night in there, and landed up flat on my arse as i attempted to stagger down the steps at closing time onto Shudehill!
Some old dear, who happened to be passing, took pity on me as i gazed up at the stars and gave me a few pokes with the end of her umbrella!

You’ve got me curious now, so I did some digging. The brilliant Pubs of Manchester blog doesn’t mention it…I’m talking late 60’s. Presumably it disappeared with the general ‘ development’ of the area.

There was definitely a pub named 'Willie Lees pub' at one end of the Arndale bus station ... I know that only too well as i had a few sherbert lemons too many in there one night, and landed up goin' flat on my arse as i attempted to 'negotiate' the steps back onto Shudehill at closing timel!
Some old dear, who happened to be passing, took pity on me as i lay on my back dazed and gazing up at the stars, and gave me a few well aimed pokes with the end of her umbrella!

According to that site there is mention of an 'Old Red Lion' about half a mile away, in Charter Street, near Strangeways .... but it closed in 1906!… nor does this site, which is pretty comprehensive.
I went in the green door club once. Late night drinking den popular with the print workers down the roadI used to live in the Cromfort Ct flats above the Arndale...used the Swan for last orders on occassion, before slipping into THe Green Door club a few doors up...
It was just down the road from the lower Turks head in the left. Was it where the bus station is now opposite “ Turks “ ? I went to a pub there in 1980 and U2 played in an upstairs room without a stage . The pub by then was called “ rusty s “ or something similar as it was actually a gay pub long before the village was a thing . They had gig nights on a Wednesday and called it the beach club . It was another Tony Wilson venture in between the Russel club and hacienda .
thats the one..knock on door...print workers, brass and oddities ...I went in the green door club once. Late night drinking den popular with the print workers down the road

I spoke with an old mate from that era. He remembers the Red lion .. but not in Shudehill. He thinks it was The Grove. It was a long time ago and we did drink a lot of ‘ pints of mixed’ as was fashionable at the time. That’s my excuse anyway. Thanks for replies. You’ve got me curious now, so I did some digging. Not saying you’re wrong mate, but given that a few other posters don’t recall it either, I dunno.
