The Referee Tonight

He was ok but did not card some RM players for persistent fouling. KDB and Kun were constantly being pushed over with no attempt made to play the ball. KDB was really getting frustrated which stopped our momentum. Pepe was one of the worst culprits.

I thought he was okay, a little inconsistent but he did let the game flow well and didn't do anything stupid. I've seen Bale in the box often get spot kicks,

Thought he was good. Did not fall for the Real dives which took place during the entire game and all over the pitch. We are going to need the same sort of referee for the return leg.

Was it in the box or no foul? Like i said, not seen a replay yet, my initial thoughts at the match were foul but iffy on the location. Perhaps more hope than anything that it was just on the edge[/QUOTE
If I'm on the right lines and it was Fernando on Marcelo, no foul.

He was poor. Stopped the game from flowing. Too many Madrid players playing the ref. To say he did well because he didn't give Madrid a pen when bale went over (after tripping himself up) is just a referee doing his job.
I know the next ref will be a homer and Joe will have a penalty to save, it's nailed on.

I fancy this will be the standard mindset of many fans this morning and building up to the game next week! Thing is, it won't be far off the mark!

9/10 got most decision right. Even the ones I was screaming at him about were right when I saw the replays. Missed a couple of fouls but no ref is perfect

Was an excellent performance by the ref. For those that thought he was letting Pepe and Ramos get away with a lot, Kompany was man handling Bale consistently throughout the game and managed to get away with it. I've also seen penalties given for the incident involving Bale and Otamendi. Otamendi was a bit rash and then tried to pull out of the challenge but did tangle legs with Bale. Considering the pace was frantic second half, the ref did well to keep up with it. Certainly one of the better refereeing performances we've seen involving City in Europe.

Strange. I thought he was pretty shit. I suppose he was just doing what all champs league refs seem to do though, blow the whistle for fuck all tackles

I thought the same. He was better than most but it seems to be their remit to break up the game for soft fouls. It's really frustrating to watch and one of the many gripes I have with the competition.

It's a hard job for any ref with the Madridistas flinging themselves to the floor seemingly at random.

We should take a leaf out of their book. If we do manage to nick the first goal over there we should run the whole gamut of continental tactics from timewasting to false penalty appeals.

Thought he had a very decent match. Probably one of the best European ref's we've had, especially considering the amount of snipers we had in the stands apparently.

I'll always remember this guy as the ref who sent Balotelli off in the home leg against Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League. He fell for all Kiev's play acting and time wasting that night, I wasn't best pleased with him at the time. I think the sending off itself was soft but probably right against Kiev, but he didn't get much else right. That was one frustrating night.

But I have to say he was great last night. Madrid are renowned for play acting and diving and he luckily didn't fall for it. Pleasantly surprised with him, I did fear the worst when he gave a couple of soft free kicks early doors but he managed the game very well.

It's mad how people can have very differing opinions. In terms of a normal ref in Europe who blows for everything and books for everything he was ok. He let some wild ones go though, there was a passage of play in the second half where each team won the ball back like twice with blatant fouls he just let go. very weird performance I thought.

I think he was good, and usually is - he did the LFC-Dortmund game at Anfield, and was good there too. There were some soft fouls given, as players took the freekick rather than attempted to play on, but nothing terrible.

The Ramos challenge should have been a booking. Bale and a City player (de Bruyne springs to mind for some reason) pulled shocking dives. The Fernando/Marcelo freekick was correct, and helped that Fernando was barely in the area when he stopped moving!

I imagine it will be Rizzoli (the Italian who did the WC final) or the German Brych next week. We've had some extremely good refs in the CL this season, many of whom have let contact go - Carballo vs PSG for one, and the refs in Seville and Kiev.

BBC stats have 20 fouls by City and 12 by Real. That's a lot, but most seemed reasonable.

I thought he was going to give 2 penalties against Otamendi but fair play he let those go and other decisions against City i thought could be fouls. He did blow up a bit but the Madrid players really now how to claim a foul. Maybe they're hoping to win an oscar rather than the cup.

Some people will never be satisfied if they find that performance as shit. It was as close to perfect as it could be. Even with Ramos tackle, he picked the ball first and then fouled Fern in continuation, foul with no booking was fair to me. I don't think any of Madrid's penalty/foul shouts deserved bookings too. Not penalties, not fouls but each of them players were entitled to fail down in those situations, the closest for real dive was Bale trying to pick a foul from Kompany on the edge of the box as he was obviously trying to earn the foul before anything but again, it was not a classic dive, he was just trying to put himself into Vinnie's path to earn the foul, something players do all the time and can't be considered as a dive.

We had our share of soft attempts to earn fouls, Aguero comes to mind when he tried to earn a foul for a push from back, was never a foul that one.

Superb performance, I couldn't ask more than that. If you find that refereeing as a shit, then I'm afraid you might be for a shock in Madrid, I doubt we'll see officiating as close as good as this one.
