The pro western side in Ukraine are just trying to protect their independence as a country and rightly so, Russia is rushing in and taking a opportunity solely based on civil unrest. They need to be stopped.
Russia is rushing in and taking something that for the vast majority of its history has belonged to them and where ethnic Russians outnumber ethnic Ukrainians by over a two-and-a-half to one ratio. The Ukraine was only given the Crimea by Russia as essentially a diplomatic gesture during the Soviet era and obviously under the presumption that the Ukraine and Russia would remain joined under the Soviet Union. There was no transfer of sovereignty when it was handed over because it all fell under the umbrella of the Soviet Union. Now this materially-empty gesture in the Soviet era apparently means something material and apparently the west has a right to interfere when it's none of our business. Would we take a blind bit of notice Russia telling us what to do with Northern Ireland, Gibraltar or the Falklands? Would we fuck - and all those cases are less straightforward than the Crimea. It's absurd to expect Russia take any notice of the west about trying to regain territory a) it has a hugely legitimate claim to b) where the majority of citizens want Russian sovereignty and where the Parliament has just voted to join Russia. Unless Russian soldiers are massacring ethnic Ukrainians, we've no right to interfere.

Well said.

But it is the media that sets the tone and decides who are the good guys and bad guys in this particular incident and the majority of the masses will follow suit. Russia understands the contempt and disrespect in which they are held by the rest of Europe and America and they know that longstanding prejudice so to speak, which was the underlying emotion behind the attack of Germany in the 1930's will never change as people are constantly indoctrinated to despise and view Russia as the outsiders and something profoundly substandard.

Putin knows all this so he is just going to do what is best for Russia and will not give a flying beans about what the rest of Europe and America think or reacts. He has a lot of flaws no doubt but a strong and wise leader he is.

Quick check - has Sunderland fallen to the Germans yet? Remember we have a game in hand against them so I hope that Muller, Lahm and co haven't joined them by the time the game's played.

No, I did as well.

In response to what a couple of posters have said about the Russians in Crimea wanting to join Russia, it's exactly the same in Donetsk and that's where it will get nasty if it happens, it's the biggest source of mineral wealth in Ukraine.

The difference with the Don Bass region, is, unlike Crimea, is that although the majority are Russian speaking they still see themselves as ethnic Ukrainian, rather than Russian. Things appear to have somewhat simmered down in the east since the law acknowledging Russian as an official language was reinstated.
Thats not quite true. Unlike the Crimea in which ethnic Russians outnumber Ukrainians by 2 or 3 to 1, in Eastern Ukraine the numbers of Russians and Ukrainians is roughly the same.

Based off the last cenus, I think you're confusing language and ethinicity:

Ethinicity:

Language:

Most areas, excluding Luhansk & Severodonetsk in the east are >70% Ukranian.

I just looked at the Wiki pages for the main cities in the east where the largest proportion of the population lives i.e. Kharkiv and Donetsk, and they listed similar percentages for ethnic Russians as Ukrainians. I don't think your map disagrees with this.

The point I was trying to make was that unlike Crimea, these areas do not appear to have a clear majority of either ethnic Russians or Ukrainians so any problems there would have the potential to be much worse than in Crimea.

When i see this twat getting involved i tend to think that the stance the opposition is taking to his views might just be right.
Anyone see that thick fuck simon hughes mentioning Yalta 1945 as example of conference in context to Ukraine/Crimea situation.
Stay the fuck away from this, because you just know it will end up as our fault if the fan hits the shit.

There's too much money and business at stake. And in this world Money > Justice.

Besides, who's right and wrong in this one?

Lastly, they may as well just move on. There is nothing anyone can do that wouldn't be hugely disproportionate and even more disaterous so that's it, fini.

how very dare these crimeans choose their host nation?

who do they think they are ffs?

falkland islanders?

tut tut

a strong Russia is beneficial to world peace ,they need the Crimea, it seems reasonable that a super power should have the ports it needs, if China or North Korea starts firing rockets in a random fashion then Russia will be an ally
