The Ukraine Defence Council has just announced full mobilization of all troops. There's a session on right now at the UN whereby the NATO countries are beginning to be a bit sterner with Russia over its plans; the US has announced it will suspend the pre-meetings of the forthcoming G8 conference

The problem is that NATO members have previously guaranteed the territorial borders of the Ukraine as part of the Budapest Memorandum and nobody knows what effect this will have. Russia has lost the Ukraine politically and the new Government are going to be more West oriented which Russia fears will lead to some massive subsides from the US in exchange for them putting a missile defence network right next to Russia.

This "Russian interests and citizens" talk is just complete nonsense and straight out of the Hitler playbook (almost word for word in fact). They don't give a shit about ethnic Russians in Crimea.

Russia also have the other problem that every country in the former Soviet bloc will almost instantly turn against them if they get into a war with a country that they guaranteed territory to, which might lead to a different pro-Western government in place.

Everything is on a knife-edge at the moment. Putin is trying to get control of the Ukraine territories back without provoking NATO members, and the NATO members are wondering whether to be all Chamberlain about it which with a US election coming in a couple of years is almost certainly not going to happen.

If Russia trips NATO up or vice-versa, we won't have chance to send people to fight on a battlefield as most of the world will be dead before we knew there was a war.

I think that it's more of a case that the west will accept that the region in dispute is almost all Russian Ukraine. That they have democratically appointed (as the more western Ukrainians have done) a leader who has turned to Russia and said "we are all Russians please can you come and protect us and your fleet.

The Ukraine in all it's glory was part of the soviet union and it does have a good many citizens who are pro Russia within it which gives Russia more rights than the US to interfere or intervene.

Wtf, i hardly log onto bluemoon anymore and the last two weeks i have so around half a dozen times, 3 of which i have stumbled across fukin pricks having a little pop at me even though i haven't posted any thread for sometime now. The US should shut up and butt out because Russia is as likely to give up on the Crimea and its warm water port as the US is on all those places in the Americas where it likes to send its troops and train the vassal state's security forces. Watch Fox News (not for its accurate reporting, I must add) to see the opinions of the more 'impractical' Americans over this issue.

In their opinion Obama is dragging his feet and they should "take it to the Ruskies". As you said, they most likely won't engage the Russians, but they'll lend their military "support" to Ukraine. Then it all depends on whether Putin views that as the Americans satisfying their obligation to Ukraine and the Budapest Memorandum or as interference with Russian interests. If Putin makes "Middle-Class Americans" feel threatened, expect fireworks. Recent history should tell you that.
