Pidge were you pretending to be military down the pub last night per chance?

I believe that even if it was an elected government that is in power this situation would still occur, Putin is determined to bring "lost" Russian lands back inside the Russian borders.

Somewhat true, Ukraine is a divided country. Around half of it wants to stay close/move closer to Russia and the other side wants the exact opposite. However, you can't blame that on Russia or Putin. Previous governments tried to walk a thin line and be positive in both directions, wanting stronger relations with the EU whilst staying close to Moscow. The new government, unelected and unaccountable, only wants it one way and is anti-Russian (against the wishes of the majority). Yanukovych may have needed to go due to his corruption and his anti-democratic actions, but the coup government hasn't solved any of those problems, in fact, it's made them worse and added new problems into the bargain. The current situation in the Ukraine is completely predicable and trying to blame Russia or Putin for the unrest is simply belying the fact that there's a damn good reason for them to be pissed off - their democratic wishes have been ignored and their government has been seized by anti-Russians, many of whom are on the far-right.

Just to contextualise the situation.
