The Smiths & Morrissey thread

Ha ha no just can’t be arsed with the small print and scrolling left to right.
I’ll be home later tonight and will read on the computer
Basically says he's not a rw racist neo Nazi etc. nothing too new - basically thick twats thinking nf disco is probably nf etc. looks like mozza might be going full khaldoon on them.

Morrissey’s right: this isn’t just parody, it’s stalking.

The problem with online stalkers is that, pretty much, the law is on their side. It’s a freedom of speech issue, apparently. If someone steals your profile on social media, it really is quite hard to get them to stop.

So good luck to the singer Morrissey, who has hired lawyers and privacy specialists to stop a campaign of “fraud, disinformation and defamation” attempting to link him to the far right. Never faced anything quite like that, but I’ve had imitators, some harmless, some not. I’ve stumbled across an angry social media post from Ronnie O’Sullivan taking umbrage at something I’d written about him on a platform I’ve always avoided. I met some Nottingham Forest fans smarting about something I did not post, and an opinion I did not hold. And Sky Sports News once led its bulletins for several hours on a transfer story swiped from a fake Twitter account, created that day in my name.

I think some of the hoax accounts remain. My name, my picture, not me. I’ve made clear my aversion to social media. Parody accounts, Twitter used to call them. Except a friend, a very public figure, had a parody account that used the name of his wife, his kids and posted as if it was him. That’s not parody, that’s identity theft. And it’s not freedom of speech, either. As Morrissey rightly identified, it’s stalking.

Free fall
We’ve lost our way on freedom of speech anyway. Not free enough at one end, too free at the other. It would help if some of its great advocates understood the basic principle. When Voltaire offered the sentiment “I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it”, he probably wasn’t thinking of standing square behind the right to burn refugees. If you’re going to die on a hill, François-Marie, nobler ones are available.

The complexity is that some of the suggested limitations are so dangerous — the potential policing of overheard alehouse chat, for instance — that we now pull too far in the other direction. Nobody should have the right to absolute free speech, the right to shout “fire” in a crowded theatre if there isn’t one. We all have a duty of care and a responsibility not to get the audience trampled to death.
