It’s unbelievable how one-sided the history we teach in this country. When I moved to the USA aged 18 I literally knew nothing about the American war of independence. I thought we’d won every war we’d ever had.

A bit like when the Dutch fleet sailed up The Medway and burned Royal Navy ships in Chatham Dockyards (1667).
And the defeat by Zulu warriors at Isandlwana in 1879.
Not much glory or heroism in highlighting defeats ,so best sweep them under the carpet.
(A bit like The Bin Dippers suffering 6 home defeats on the bounce,it never happened).

It’s unbelievable how one-sided the history we teach in this country. When I moved to the USA aged 18 I literally knew nothing about the American war of independence. I thought we’d won every war we’d ever had.

You jest? Surely the dozens of Hollywood films of them beating us was a bit of a giveaway?

Doesn't every country play that game? I heard the French claim Trafalgar was a bit of a messy skirmish and a friend of the family from Scotland always said how he was astonished to discover when he came down South during the war that there were other battles apart from Bannockburn as they were never mentioned at school. (actually saw a programme the other day about how we had a French king for about 18 months but it turns out we've airbrushed that one out of history as well - just after nasty King John I think).

That’s because it’s only a significant war for America, and nothing but a blip in our long history.
