The Squad planning thread

Seems like this has been on the horizon for 2years but no one at the club could see it. Going back for Gundogan was a massive mistake but thats the tip of the iceberg.
Gundogan played 50 games for Barca with a very solid overall season. On a free it made sense. However, nobody could have seen how bad it would be, he literally is playing like hes 50yrs old. I don't know wtf has happened inside the few months that we ended up signing him but its frightening.

Whats your point?
My point is twofold. First, we seem not to have rated him at points in the past, and I'm unconvinced that opinion has changed. Second, if we were to go for him, I would be asking the recruitment personnel what they are seeing now that was already patently evident in the summer of 2023.

For the record, I've long been an admirer and considered him the ideal replacement for Gundogan (he's not, for me, a defensive midfielder). That said, his wife gave birth to their first child in February, I think, and they appear to be settled in Milan, so I'm not sure he'll be an immediate option.

You know full well that its not that simple. Progression as a footballer is not linear.

99.9% of all the top clubs in the world clearly didn't see what AC Milan did and congratulations to them, how many players have they bought that turned out shit and they have had to sell them off to Genoa and Empoli?

Any praise to our current recruitment personnel who have not only built a squad thats won trophy after trophy for 10yrs but also managed to finance most of it by finding talented youngsters that enable us to sell them for huge profits after a few years.

The recruitment team have done a fantastic job but they are also human and not beyond mistake. I've pointed out before that Reijnders and Nunes share similar traits, but even at AZ it was clear that he was a special talent and one with a high ceiling; his ability to arrive late in the box is uncannily similar to Gundogan.

Reijnders would have been in the PEC Zwolle side at the same time as Phillippe Sandler, so somebody never rated him, and we could have picked him up from AZ for a comparative pittance but instead bought Nunes.
Ok smart arse, which right back, centre back and goalkeeper will be the ones we will have missed out on that you can remind us about four years from now. We’ll all bookmark your post. Deal?

What does this mean? Are you saying someone can't pick out 21/22 year olds that 4 years from now will be considered elite or even world class? I can pick out quite a few but that doesn't mean if we don't bring them on here that we will have missed out. Unless of course we are linked and instead move for alternatives who don't make the grade...

I’m saying that I’m sick of people saying we should have bought this player or not sold that player with the benefit of hindsight. This Reijnders fella or whatever he’s called. Is he about 26 years old now? Well why is he still where he is and not at Madrid or Barcelona? Why had no one heard of him until a couple of weeks ago?

Gotcha...

Don't think we had a need for him when he moved, Kev going down in the Burnley game caused the Nunes panic. He'd been in Milan almost 2 months by then.

Do like him as a player though. Euros was a very impressive stage for him to get his name out there.

For the record AC Milan is just as big, if not a bigger club than Barcelona...just saying.

Also. Reijnders is an excellent player who has been starting regularly for the Netherlands. Someone who would absolutely be an asset at City right now. I don't know anything about him being linked with us in the past...
