The Squad planning thread

mcatee confirmed not there as well, going to U21 euros. No word on stones fitness either, so will assume he's not going too.

So squad could be

GKS: ederson, Ortega, Bettinelli (3)

DEFS: Lewis, Nunes, Dias, akanji, Ake, khusanov, gvardiol, Reis, Ait Nouri, O Reilly (10)

MID: Bernardo, Gundogan, Reijnders, Nico G, Cherki, Foden, Doku, Savio, Bobb, Rodri (10)

ST: Haaland, Marmoush (2)

That's 25, and assumes Stones is injured and takes 0 academy players other than those established in 1st team already

I had Stones in (he's been with England this week doing rehab!) and no Reis or Echeverri for my 25, Fifa do say 26 minimum though, so I guess 1 of them goes in to make 26.

I think we'll take the minimum of 26. I think you can take 33 but Pep's head would explode have to manage that many players.

Reis and Echeverri out on loan and retain Bernardo and Akanji and I think we’re done unless we do a madness and go back in for Wirtz.
That won't be ruthless now would it?

I wanted Kovacic. But if we are being ruthless, let's be ruthless. I like that list

8 homegrown but can be made up of a max of 4 homegrown from other clubs if you wish, before you have to include them in the non-HG.
Yeah so there's no problem with Trafford being club trained. Its strictly better than being just nation trained, all the benefits with no downsides

we spent a lot of money on Reis to not have a clear path for his development. If he is to be kept and not loaned out this season we should get rid of 2 centerbacks. Akanji is the non HG one so seems like a nonbrainer. We need to clarify the squad a bit.
He's 19...how can you say there is no clear path for his development

Dias 28, Stones 31, Ake 30, Akanji 30, Gvardiol 22, Khasanov 21

Thats the ages of our CBs come.first game of the season, even if they don't go this summer the 30+ lads will be gone in the next 2 years when Reis will be 21 and ready to get more consistent game time (when Dias will be 30 himself and maybe in the final 2 years of his time with us)

There is a plenty of opportunities for him, and at 19 hes in no rush....how many teams vying for trophies start with a 21 year old at CB let alone a 19 year old? Cubarsi is the only one that comes to mind

How much has Quansah (22) played at Liverpool?

"a fee in excess of £40 million was included by Manchester City as an option to re-sign James Trafford from Burnley in future, should they be interested in the idea"

Is it worth bringing him back?

At 19.5 he should already be good enough to be 4th CB when we spent 35m on him. There simply is higher expectations imo. If not then loan him to a strong, Europa league minimum side, and bring him back to be in the rotation next year.

Fee is excessive and I think if we could get him for ~30 I would. Rotate with ederson this season and starter next.

If stones goes, reis gets left out I think. Yeah forgot echeverri, so technically even with the announced left out players and kovacic's injury, we would still have 27 first team players. Academy kids can forget it, was saying earlier I think the current u21's will get completely screwed by this rebuild. We'll end up selling that entire generation.

19.5? What's all that about, hes 19

How don't you know hes not getting loaned out?

There is clearly space over the next 12-24 months for him to play for us, maybe sooner

Take a strong squad, try and win it, and then use the winnings to bolster the squad further whilst simultaneously allowing a couple of 'world champions' to leave.

The club paid an insane amount for such a young unproven CB. If you pay that much you expect some type of potential and you can only reach it by playing him. If he still needs 2 years or something then u can easily loan him to France or maybe try to loan him within the PL. it just makes no sense to pay 35M to barely play that guy. Even Endrick got more games and he plays in a position with the world‘s best. It’s the same with Khusanov. 40m for a CB with such good attributes is not going to get better if they barely play. I think keeping 1 of Ake/ Stones and Akanji is okay but here like in the midfield we need to sell at least 2 so the talent ( O’Reilly, Reis, Khusanov) can actually get game time.

I am sure Reis would’ve played more for Madrid same with Khusanov. Not only because they had several injuries in the CB position but also because if Madrid deems you good enough they play you no matter the age. Asensio came out of nowhere and is only a year older than Khusanov, they bought Huijsen for 50 and are planning to introduce another 6‘5 guy from their academy as the number 4 in front of injury prone militao and Alaba. If you want you can.

For me the age thing is just a reason not to play certain players even though these same players would most likely start for another club at a similar level. The best example is PSG. Imagine we bought Doue for 50M and told him that he will get his chances because he is too raw/ young or whatsoever. Obviously it’s easier as an offensive player to start because your failures most likely don’t return into a goal but still. Khusanov had good games - PL player of the month and Reis shows that he might actually be our best ball playing CB already behind Stones.

Juventus sold Huijsen for like 8m and look where he is after one season.

Viana and Pep will know what to do obviously yet - no one is perfect.
