The Squad planning thread

The way we play just doesn't fit the personnel we currently have. That's something that doesn't seem likely to change, but it does seem like we're only a couple signings away from being in a better place.

Right back has to be the immediate next move. Nunes has improved immensely, but we need someone for him to rotate with because Akanji at right back has not worked and will only work against a handful of sides we'll play 4 or 5 games against.

Midfielder to replace Gundo if he ends up leaving. I'm probably going to be crucified for this, but I'd rather just keep Grealish for that role instead of spending the money for MGW.

Goalkeeper if absolutely necessary. We know what we're going to get with Ederson, so we either open the game up some to pull the low blocks out or we play quicker defenders to compensate for the high line. Also not a fan of Ederson planning his next move for a whole season.

I think Jack's days here have already been discounted, but Eddie is probably safe imo

Oh I know Jack's done, but I still think he can do what we need in midfield. Shit I don't even think he could be worse than Savinho on the wing.

Eddie is definitely safe, but I'm not enthused about keeping someone who was close to putting pen to paper on a deal elsewhere a year ago just to leave for free a year from now.

Seeing stories about Juventus after Oscar bobb
Hope we don’t even think about this

It wouldn't surprise me. The club seem to love the net spend argument at the moment.

I've got a feeling we are going to cash in on one of Bobb or O'reilly this summer.

Based on who Pep is playing ill not be suprised if it's Khusanov, N.Gonzalez and Bobb heading out the door....and i wouldnt fucking blame them.

Khusanov behind every defender in every position despite being our best player when thrown into the team way back when.

Nico G is behind Rodri(fair), Reijnders, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Kovacic and probably inverted fullbacks

Bobb last choice forward, 2 sub appearance when games already won
It would be incredibly dumb to get rid of all that youth in favour of keeping a bunch of declining players in their 30s for one more year. That is some diabolically bad squad planning. Gundogan, Kovacic, Ake, Akanji, Stones still have to be top of the list.

Which two are you referring to? Not trying to argue, just looking for clarification.

I don't even think we're far off in terms of squad building. Tactics just don't seem to fit who we have.
My apologies. Grealish and Gibbs-White. We are short a central midfielder but one who can deputise for Rodri. What we don't need is another pastiche, someone who requires help from others or whose inclusion necessitates a change in playing style.

I think Nico G can do that, but just isn't getting the game time to prove it or learn.

i feel like out season is dependant on who goes, and in what position.
More down to adapting to the transitions and as always taking the chances. Al-Hilal weren't the most outstanding team but knew how to exploit our weaknesses.

Which means we've got two different groups of players. This usually happens to teams who keep changing the manager. United for example.
We've had the same boss for nearly a decade so you have to assume we've signed less possession heavy players for a reason.
Next question is why we set up to make this a dangerous plan.

We’re not going to adapt to transitions if Gundogan and Bernardo continue to play in midfield, and Akanji continues to feature for us.

Still being wasteful in front of goal doesn't help either. Bono kept them in that first half.

Dont think we would be playing CL next season without Nico and Khusanov last winter.

Dias / Akanji / Ake played through injuries during multiple games last season, Laporte never really recovered from that and we should expect the same for those 3
