The Squad planning thread

Kovacic, Bernie and tijiani are leaving next season

Bring in anderson and morgan gibbs white

A goal and an assist for Kees Smit in the AZ's Cup Final victory yesterday. If we let this opportunity pass, it'll be up there with Joao Neves.

To get him we’d have to move Tijjani on surely…
We're going to lose Silva, may lose Rodri, and Kovacic is entering the final year of his contract. We also don't know what the plans for Lewis are either. We've plenty of space without shifting others, and Smit would take a season to bed in anyway.

It isn't about players and space it's about minutes, pretty sure Rodri isn't going anywhere so we are only losing Bernardo's minutes, Anderson, probably more midfield minutes for O'Reilly will more than cover that. The only way to bring in a second midfielder is if another with quite a few mintues this season leaves.

Fair point and I appreciate that, but Smit is only 20 and a long-term investment.

We were poor both internationally and in Europe, and part of that is down to burning too many players out domestically, especially from November through February. One, in turn, could put some of that against the extraordinary circumstances of last summer and continued injuries, but some of it is also down to us being unable to effectively utilise a squad across a long season.

True but there will be an expectation next season we should be getting more ot of Reijnders, Foden, Gonzalez, if there is a belief in the club we won't then one or two of those need to move to bring in somebody else. I'm not sure any of them will be leaving though.

I agree that we should be looking for more from them, but even then I still think we need to add quality when it becomes available.

It's a bit concerning that all three players have seen such a drop off in minutes and form since January, but this goes to my point of utilising the squad more fully across the season. We've struck upon two different settled starting elevens at two different times in the season, but I'm less convinced that method will be successful outside of domestic competitions. We still need to break from the idea of 3,500+ minutes being the average, it's unsustainable.

What are the chances of any of our younger prospects being introduced to the next seasons squad?
Reis looks like he is ready but we already have Dias, Khuzanov, Gvardiol, Guehi and possibly Ake covering that position.
I'm thinking along the lines of Echeverri, Nypan, Mukasa, Mfuni.
All young but based on this season some of our better performers are Khusanov, Cherki, O Reilly, all young and eager too.

I suspect all of them will do another year on loan, Echeverri maybe sold

Reis defo imo and then Echeverri maybe depending on signing Anderson and maybe Smit.

Reis should come back and challenge the others, especially with Stones definitely and perhaps Ake departing. He made the recent Brazil squad and still has an outside chance of going to the World Cup. He would have stayed last summer had circumstances dictated otherwise, so after doing as advised, he deserves his opportunity.

Echeverri hasn't managed a full 90 minutes in his wasted season, Mukasa started brightly at Leicester but his chances have dwindled, much like his current club's, and Mfuni's season ended in March with that ankle injury. I can't see any of them breaking through next season. Mukasa and Mfuni are still very young and need season-long loans, probably in the Championship, whereas Echeverri either needs to sit in Girona for another year or be loaned somewhere else. Depending on our transfer activity, we may cut him loose. The odd one is Nypan. We needed him to stay in England to qualify as homegrown, but where he goes next or whether he stays is anyone's guess.
