The Squad planning thread

That’s the problem isn’t it? If Rodri is staying but say Gonzalez, Bernardo and Kovacic are going then I’d be bringing in Ibrahim Maza asap and Pardo for Savinho
Of those contracted for next season, the only one I could possibly see leaving early is Kovacic. Might be wrong, but I think that throughout his career, he's chosen to move to another club while under contract rather than sit it out. However, the way he has spoken when interviewed at Wembley and the reported salary make me think he'll see this coming year through before leaving.

The anyone that wants to leave can leave policy was all Pep, he isn't here anymore so no reason why that policy needs to stay. Our best players cannot be allowed to leave unless they leave as free agents and if we are letting our best players leave as free agents, Viana isn't doing his job.

Exactly! Hugo needs to sell the new vision to the players and remind them they have a contract and we want them to stay.

So it looks like Savinho is out the door. Can't believe this has been sanctioned unless we have an upgrade coming in. After all Savinho signed a long term contract until 2031.

'The 21-year-old was the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window, but has now pledged his long-term future to City.

"I am incredibly proud to be able to sign this new contract with City," Savinho said.

"It's a very special feeling to know that Pep [Guardiola] and the club have placed such faith in me.'

Anderson and Rodgers would be two brilliant signings for the midfield add a right sided winger like Doku and a young RB and it’s the perfect summer

Seen from his perspective, we were publicly effusive about him last summer and clearly intimated that we wanted him to stay, but then by January we felt the need to upgrade by buying Semenyo. After his injury, he was basically a bit-part player, but even when he did perform well and score (Palace) he was straight back on the bench for Bournemouth and an unused substitute in both cup finals. We’re often a bit partisan, but I think both he and us have been marking time for a year.

I think that he didn’t go last season because of something at the Spurs end. Just supposition, but I reckon Spurs wanted shot of Brennan Johnson last summer and would have replaced him with Savinho. However, for some reason that deal didn’t go through until January, right at the start, by which time Savinho had extended and we had agreed to let Bobb go. Spurs are now, coincidentally, promising him the same length of contract. Just my interpretation.

I’m quite sure we will have his replacement in line and probably have had since last summer.

Just thinking to myself w haven’t signed a world class midfielder since Rodri.

We have to address that this summer. The midfield is not up to it
Think this is very subjective. When we signed Rodri we don’t know he would become what he has, we always hoped but he developed monumentally here.

We don’t really tend to buy world class players, we make them. Kev, Aguero and Silva were all ready for that next step.

Haaland and Josko came in from great teams but not in the superpower bracket we now find ourselves in. I can’t think of the last player we bought from a calibre of club like ourselves apart from Donna from PSG (which I’m expecting people to say he isn’t good enough blah blah blah).

That 60m signing where we know a player is great and then gets to develop here has been our best type of buy in recent years. Walker, Dias, Stones, Rodri, Ederson, Cancelo, Sterling, Bernie, Kev. No one would have considered them world class when they came in but they turned into monsters here. PSG have done this well in recent years as well.

Rodri wasn't a world class midfielder when we signed him either. Nor was Bernardo, or gundo, kdb had had 1 world class season but wasn't considered world class yet, dinho wasn't, David Silva and Yaya were the last and arguably only world class midfielders we have bought as already world class midfielders.

I still struggle to see the logic in selling Savinho unless we buy much more players than I realized.

Our current squad, strangely, is kind of anti-Maresca built.

We are loaded with attacking fullbacks who are good at holding the width, with many many central attacking players including "striker" type profiles in Marmoush and Semenyo who can play in a partnership

Whereas Maresca, atleast so far like Pep, wants wide wingers, 1 fullback back and 1 tucked in.

If you start all 4 of Haaland, Doku, Cherki and Semenyo who are the backups?

Savinho is literally THE only backup to the 2 wide players.

And then we have like 3 options to rotate the middle 2 (Foden, Reijnders, Marmoush) which is overkill.

If we played 4222/4321 the squad is made for it, but we aren't built for 3241, and selling Savinho puts us even further behind having a squad for it.
