The state of the gardens - another police incident

Used to be beautiful

It did, but I still got mugged in it twice in the early 90s after dark as it was full of gangs hanging out in the arcade.

Not matter what they do with it until they get rid of the buses and crappy busineses like arcades, it will stay a shithole.

Always been badly policed too, even though there is a semi-permament van there you never see any police patroling the place unless a demo is on.

“Gardens” is laughable isn’t it.

That grass that was laid a few times last year was relaid with 4G grass that cost thousands.

They put a market stall on it for a month. Guess what it looks like now...

The homeless situation isn’t helped by do-gooders parking up giving free soup away in the “Gardens” presumably with the council’s permission.

It’s a blight on Manchester but you have to ask where would they go if it was cleaned up?

Out of interest would you describe yourself as a do-gooder?

Piccadilly Gardens are a blight on Manchester. With Piccadilly being such a busy thoroughfare, it is alarming to see the amount of drug dealing and gang culture around the area. The times I've passed through, Police are stood by allowing criminal behaviour to occur. They appear to turn a blind eye to the anti social behaviour, even during the day.
I’ve seen open drug dealing on the street in front of all the shoppers, many of the shoppers were families with young children, at Picc Gardens. Two Policemen in a van were no more than thirty feet further up the road, didn’t seem to care. You could clearly see what was going on.

I walked from Mosley St up to Market St on another occasion and you could see groups of young lads near phone boxes. So I slowed down. I noticed a tramp would go into the phone box (obviously to leave money), one of the young lads would walk into the phone box next (obviously to take the money and put the drugs in), then he’d leave and the tramp would then go back into the phone box (obviously to retrieve the drugs).

If I could see what was going on just slowly walking past, why isn’t anything being done about it? None of it is covert in any way, it’s open drug dealing.

Blaming the homeless is a cop out, the place was a shit tip befoe this epidemic of homelessness increased the last decade.

And I remember as a kid the sally army would feed the homeless in the same place (near vickys statue) as a kid so that is nothing new

It was no where near as bad as it is now. I think harsher policing has to start happening. People being frozen on spice as visitors walk into our city for the first time is a horrendous impression. It can’t go on.

Can’t we just send them to Liverpool? No fucker would notice

I go to Liverpool a lot and it’s nowhere near as bad but Bold Street is progressively getting worse for it. So yes, why not!

Spice has been a problem foe more than 10 years, there was a shop selling it opposite aflecks for years when legal, the homeless had bult camps outside the city to sleep at under the mancunian way at several points, which the council and police demolished and fenced off a couple of years ago, now we have more sleeping in the city and the biggest open space is the gardens.

Don't blane the homeless, blame bad planning by the council and police

Harsher policing is what is needed.

Removing people sleeping in doorways. Zero tolerance.
Problem is that most people believe all the people sleeping in doorways are homeless. They’re not.
