The Stone Roses/Ian Brown

It's true. Something like 30kiat Spike Island. But you have to take in to consideration that the Roses were coming out of an indie scene where playing to 3,000 was seen as a big gig. I'm not sure the Smiths or New Order did anything bigger than the G-Mex, apart from Glastonbury. Their popularity now can be attributed to the explosion of British bands in the 90s who carried the Roses legacy in their wake. They're probably the last band to achieve success by word of mouth. The enormous success, however, of a band such as Oasis was due in part to the Roses resetting expectations as to what an indie (ish) guitar band could achieve. Oasis at Knebworth and other huge Britpop (hate that term) gigs of the 90s were the conclusion of what the Roses started with Spike Island.
Great comment.
Correct that The Smiths biggest gig in the UK would have been the Albert Hall. Gmex - a festival with Manc rrock royalty New Odrer, The Fall and solo Buzzcocks. etc didn't even sell out!

And yes there won't be another band to "make it" via word of mouth with the huge impact the Internet has made on music. You can sit at home and watch any up and coming band in any continent you care to name at any time of day.
Where as I had to cycle like fuck home from work every Friday night to get home at 5.30pm so I wouldn't miss The Tube. Miss The Tube and you missed everything!

Can't see them playing a greatest hits set again....Surely new stuffs are ready to roll!!

There will be a lot of pissed off people if they don't play a greatest hits set I reckon. Nobody wants to hear new stuff surely

I am going Wembley. Looking forward more to the return of Depeche Mode though next year, always something fresh with them. The roses just seem like they are after our cash. Yet I still go for the craic and hand my cash over.

Tried to get Wembley ones on Friday but a the standing pitch had gone. No way I'm paying tocsitvin the stands and listen.

Is that a defo with depeche mode? Seen them about 5 or 6 times over the years, went to the last tour at the M.E.N. If they're back next year along with the roses then music will be exciting again instead of all this beep de beep and brap brap shite we have to endure.
