The Titanic

I did not see a thread about this event. It's a story I've been following. Five (I believe) rich people paid 250K USD to go on a private submersible tour to the Titanic on Sunday. The launch ship has lost contact with it and it hasn't returned. It is estimated to run out of oxygen Thursday morning EST.

The Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard are saying it's still a search and rescue mission. I think it's now a recovery mission but they are being kind to the families of those aboard.

Many articles I've read have said the vehicle was essentially a death trap. The owner eschewed hiring retired navy submariners because they weren't "inspiring." He'd rather hire a "smart"25 year old to pilot the craft.

There is no substitute for experience really.
You only get experience by doing a job and doing it for very many hours.

Cost of climbing a 5000 foot mountain is free, thousands of people do it every day.

Bungee jumping, Jumping out a plane, abseiling, scuba diving, rock climbing, the list is endless are all relatively cheap and affordable and will always tragically have a rare occurrence of fatalities.

Again, no one whether rich or poor deserve to die because they want to have some thrill in their lives.
During the time when I did a bit of motorcycling, I was told 'show off and come off'.

Wise words.

How would you know if they were telling you the truth?

Who's they? The Captain of the Queen Mary 2 announcing points of interest over the ship's speakers to the guests, the potential Titanic enthusiasts onboard with Titanic coordinates, the live map of the route the Queen Mary 2 is taking that's available on your TV screen in your room and located around the ship, or smartphone GPS or other technology showing where we're sailing / current location?

I did some further reading about this in bed last night, as it was 18 months ago we booked this voyage and I recall passing the Titanic being mentioned and it sounds like we'll sail by a few miles away from it. I've read comments from people saying it can be dependent on which route you take. Sometimes you can be close by, other times 100 miles away. Some claim the Captain announces how close you are, dependent on the time of year too. Apparently the crossing in April goes very close by.

So I guess I'll find out how close we get next week. And I might sit out on deck and look over in that direction with a glass of wine and have a moment, if it's allowed.

I am going to stop reading this thread for a while.
The horror of it is sending me into a fearful place mentally.
An adventure gone terribly wrong and for what?

5 hours oxygen left, and the ship capable of rescuing the sub has only just reached the area.

Tense.

Life is a great leveller. Best case is obviously that they are rescued and decided to devote some of their wealth to the organisations and charities that helped their rescue..

I do find the media coverage very distasteful though. Yes, we're all interested and aware hoping for the best, but why the BBC need to know if there are any family aboard the rescue ships, and then proudly boast about asking that question in the press conference by posting it as if it itself is news or even relevant, is beyond me.

Oh, are the soon to be mourning on the new boats on the scene? Are they wearing black, and if so what can we glean from that? Can we have some shots of them crying? Bastards.

Best of luck for some good news very soon.

It's very sad, but what the hell anyone wants to pay 200k for a trip in a metal can with one window operated by an xbox controller is beyond me.

5 People looking into the abyss or taking it in turn to look through a tiny porthole at what? A rusting wreck at the end of the day.

My thoughts are with the people putting themselves on the line searching for them.
