The Titanic

Or, if you are running such an enterprise, perhaps listen to people who know what they are talking about when it comes to risk and safety.
This CEO sounds like an arrogant maverick who "knew best."

Who would never have been in charge of a well run organisation, it was essentially a fraudulent enterprise.

However, there really is no point to this kind of tourism. Just silly arrogant people who want an exclusive experience. I feel sorry for the kid who was took along on that ship of fools.

The fact he went with them on the damned thing probably gave the paying customers extra confidence.
Sounds like he was a person who had an inflated sense of his own judgement and capabilities. X by 100.

Was this the first trip down there or had he done previous trips in the same sub?

Maybe they should have tested the thing to depths like the Titanic about 50 times. Maybe they should have had a pilot that had been to the Titanic over 30 times and was considered one of if not the leading expert when it comes to these types of dives.

Maybe they should have realised that after being down there 3 times previously with no structural integrity problems that the fourth time it was going to implode.

Regulations at this end of the technological scale generally get outpaced by innovation. AI is a great example of this.

Interesting points on the tourism side - If you look at Pamplona that has become an international name synonymous with the running of the bull and I believe 10 people died last year. I was asked by a mate a long while back to go for a laugh but that's still out of my comfort zone, plus I get knackered now after about 100 meters.

A massive bull running behind you would probably help keep you going

The vessel had been used multiple times. It was never x-ray'd after each use so we will never know if it went down with structural fatigue on its final journey down; or if it simply developed it on this journey.

One thing that annoys me if the reasoning behind hiring fresh out of uni engineers. They were chosen on the reasoning nobody is inpired by "50yo white guys". How you could think like that with so much at stake boggles my mind. They should have had at least one person with real time experience in this field. What their age and skin colour was should not be a consideration.

I suspect an actual expert would be wanting a hefty pay package and him reluctant to pay them their worth being a main point of his reasoning to. He just hid behind the excuse of wanting young fresh thinkers who would of course be cheaper.

I think you're right, the reason for the interest isn't so much that they were rich but it was the whole 'trapped' / clock ticking down narrative. I think you might be taking a generous view that it's predominantly about hope, I'm sure it is for many but some of the coverage seemed to be not much more than a ghoulish spectator sport.

I agree any human life lost is sad but I think there is a valid conversation on why and where resources are deployed in avoiding tragedy. We say any human life lost is a tragedy and invest in the hope of rescue/redemption for a few but then we regularly ignore large scale loss of life that is often preventable. Cognitive dissonance in overdrive.

I think in practice it's easier for people to invest in a self-contained incident like this because there are no knock on implications to have to think about. They'll be some changes to some maritime regulations that won't impact the majority of us and then life goes on. If we truly invest in the rescue of a group of migrants we have to ask about the next group and ultimately we end having to ask ourselves very uncomfortable questions that we either don't like the answers to or we feel so overwhelmed that we absent ourselves from the discussion.

I think it's entirely consistent to feel empathy for the loss of life but deep disquiet that significant resources are devoted to saving a small number of lives whilst others are left to perish because we or the people we choose to govern us don't want to face into the wider implications of those situations.
Excellent post
