The Titanic

It could have been ten...

On a serious note..how the fuck do you attach a winch to a tiny submersible in the dark with strong water currents at that depth? If they get rescued it will be miraculous and somehow we have to hope it gets done.
Gorilla glue.

These weights may already have jettisoned
Yes, probably. I assume they would need to have some weight left to prevent rising too quickly and assume this would have to be adjusted based on number of passengers and total load weight. Possible calculation error in this weight?

Given finite time, I would say reasonably easily. Obviously time is of the essence and even if they can get a line on it, it may not pull free if well and truly snagged
I just have this image of a line flopping about in the water and maybe a small area it can attach to..is it magnetic ??..In truth I do feel very sad for the individuals and their families..an absolute hell on earth..there is a bit of me that thinks that certain individuals have perhaps achieved so much in their lives, make risky undertakings like these as a stimulation..it is like the freeclimbers, can barely watch it on TV..the bloke who came down from the edge of space and his line got tangled..ffuck me, have done most things in life but would never put my life or families life at risk.

Felix Baumgartner? Had a problem with his visor heating but his suit itself was fine, his problem was the near terminal spin early in the jump, although he managed to correct it. He's also probably saved a lot of lives in space exploration, they learned a lot about going extra-vehicular at those altitudes from that jump.

if they have heard the tapping then they must have a smallish search area to cover, how far would the tapping travel at that depth?
Sound can really travel through water, there's no interference like there is in the air. It travels slower but can be heard thousands of miles away.

Assuming they can locate it and it has a lifting eye, an ROV could attach a line to it pretty quickly. I worked with ROVs a long time ago and they were pretty good then. There is still hope.
