The Tottenham Thread 12/13

Why would Willian move from a CL team to Spurs? Why would Shakhtar sell him for less than Chelsea offered in January (especially considering that Roman is mates with their owner)?

That's the issue that keeps being glossed over here. Spurs are NOT a champion's League club. They have qualified for the Champion's League once. There is absolutely no guarantee they will be a Champion's League club in the coming season(s). They are most certainly behind City, United and Chelsea in terms of current squad, and in terms of ability/finances to attract players. 4th place is the best they can get, and even then you'd put Spurs behind Arsenal (a side who haven't failed to qualify for the Champion's league for something like 14 or 15 years). Quite why the huge numbers of top players Dave thinks will be joining them wuld even contemplate it is beyond me. Spurs are a fairly large English club, but their reputation outside England isn't all that spectacular. Spurs haven't won the FA Cup for more than 20 years, they haven't won a European trophy for nearly 30 years, and it's been over half a century since their last league title. The only trophies they won in the last 2 decades are 2 League Cups, a feat matched by Leicester City.

Teams to have won the League Title since Spurs last managed it:-

Manchester Utd x14
Liverpool x13
Arsenal x6
Everton x4
Leeds United x3
Chelsea x3
Derby County x2
Ipswich Town
Nottingham Forest
Aston Villa
Blackburn Rovers
Manchester City

We didn't win it; we bought it. Ask any vermin, Arsenal, red Mickeys or Spurs fan and they'll confirm it!

Just read some quotes of the player and "London" seems to be a big draw for him.
Hopefully the next Dos Santos then.
So possibly the glamour of the prem and living in London are making him drool.

No idea then if this does attract him why your chaps were turned down.
I do know they really wanted to keep him then but now he has spoken out saying he wants to leave.

Makes sense in light of that information. Timing is everything and Shakhtar may have been desperate not to lose their best player midway through the season.

Well, they seems to want to come anyway. London/Premier League/Wages are a big incentive. Apparently Julio Cesar is headed to QPR so that seems to undermine most of what you are saying.

I think you overstate the importance of 6 group stage games in the Champions league. It is only a draw to players who are going to teams with a possibility of winning it, or going deep into the knockout stages. That means a few teams in England and Spain, and a couple in Italy and Germany.

City, Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea might be the 1st choice destination for players, but they can't sign everyone, and Spurs can offer regular 1st team football. Players might look at top 4 squads and wonder whether they will play regularly

Spurs are one of the few teams who you could see breaking into the top 4 although AVB is a question mark for me, as is Levy who has cost Spurs points in the opening games by dragging out negotiations for forwards.

Players are going to look at the Modric sale and think I want a buy out clause in my contract. So I think this whole deal is worthless to Spurs.

Marvin I just think he's been blinded by the VDV deal and thinks this can be done everytime. The new tv deal means a fair few clubs are going to be able to match, or surpass Spurs in terms of wage structure, if they maintain their current stance. The Real deal is a insult. First out the door will be Walker if he has another good season.

Lloris and Dembele are first class signings would improve any squad in the top four. Despite them signing Ade, still think they're short on strikers. They're pretty much buggered if Defoe gets injured. Not really convinced by Willian, you know what these Brazilians coming from poor leagues like Ukraine/Russia are like.
