6-3 defeat to a team strengthened considerably by first team players. I'm sure the Spurs lads were all happy to get a run out, and it was decent work for their fitness, but it's scorelines like this that emphasise why players with a certain number of first team appearances under their belt should be ineligible for youth level football (and why no over 21's should be allowed). A match (and a competition) supposedly there to allow youth to develop turns into a group of experienced first team Premier League players handing out a battering to a group of inexperienced youth players trying to develop their skills/tactics and gain some experience/confidence.

The new U21 Premier League (this is the second season) replaced the old Reserves Premier League.

The emphasis is on developing players to bridge the gap from U-18 Academy Football to League Football.

Up to three overage outfield players are allowed for each club, plus an overage goalkeeper.

I think the mix is perfect - it allows the fringe first team squad players to get some competitive minutes under their belt while also giving more experienced players coming back from injury a good run-out.

Matty. Don't worry about that. I think the club knows how this setup is and are quite happy for our youth
to compete like this. Remember it's not about winning leagues/trophies, it's about learning to use systems
and playing against different systems and styles.

A Spurs fan claiming that we cannot criticise Spurs (on a City forum) because we were not that good last season (still better than Spurs even though it was arguably one of the best seasons they have had in the last 50-odd years)?

GHoddle, I am beginning to think you are the dimmest Spurs fan on this forum. Granted, that is an achievement in itself. Well done.

The point was that the poster imo underestimates the difficulty of playing away to promoted teams, not that we are immune from criticism.

Just going to ignore the customary childish insult from you lol.

I was wondering when it would happen again. Didn't take him long lol

Action from Hotspur Way today...

Spurs edging ahead of Liverpool for Willian. That would be over £80m well spent and would see the back of Bale.

Spurs simply spending the money before selling Bale so they don't get ripped off.

Is it upsetting knowing Bale won't play for you again? I'd say you are stronger without him and with your new players than without them but with the Welsh maestro.

£80 million for somebody who's only had 1 good season is a great deal!

It's the perfect time to sell, Madrid are really desperate because Neymar embarrassed them and Perez needs to do something

-- Mon Aug 19, 2013 6:24 pm --

Some interesting songs...

Just a random thought ... But arent spurs owned by a some reclusive billionaire - if so, why do they have to sell Bale like some people suggest because they are signing players ?

I understand your point and it makes sense but then Ntcham and Evans can gain a lot from occasionally playing against the likes of Sandro.

It should be upto the clubs how they use the reserves. My own opinion is that I like our approach. I don't know Spurs' approach as I only know of the squad for todays game. It makes no sense using squad players or players who are 20 and over with no chance of playing regularly in the first team. I'd rather we release players who are just making up the numbers.

Yes, Spurs owner, Joe Lewis, is a billionaire.

And yes, Spurs don't need to sell Gareth Bale, despite what many on here will try to tell you.

I've already done the maths on here several times, but you can now add about £3,500,000 received from Fulham for the sale of Scott Parker.

But that is pittance if you have a billionaire owner

Do you promise to apologise to me when he is sold? I shall do the same if he stays.

Deal?

It's too late now, Spurs had the chance to build a team around Bale, but his head has been turned now. Instead they will try and use the £80M to build a stronger team. They'd have been financially better off surrounding Bale with players that can give him a stage and the opportunity to win trophies.

But £80m will be good compensation. Remains to be seen if the post-Bale Spurs will be better. All depends on the quality of the signings and whether AVB can get them to gel.
