The "which famous person died today" thread

The brains behind Boney M, Frank Farian, has passed away at 82. He was the true voice of the male singer/dancer, Bobby Farrell, who merely mimed who died several years ago.

Coincidentally, Farrell died on the same date and in the same city as Grigori Rasputin, the subject of one of the group’s songs, and who he had dressed as in some live performances.

The man who gave us the City anthem
"Hark now hear, the City sing, United ran away......."

Alan Mills, tennis umpire from Stretford. Hardly a household name, granted, but a face millions would know from the annual Wimbledon coverage. Grey suit and grey hair, seen staring heavenward at even greyer skies or staring courtward at even darker behaviour.
Remember him having the unenviable task of trying to deal with Ilie Nastase back in the 70s
He didn't want to disqualify him when he went off on one but had to maintain some kind of order.

Thing with Boney M that always got me was when we had "The Troubles " it was stepping on eggshells type of stuff then Boney M released Belfast. Not an " oh isn't it wonderful - Harland and Woolf and the Titanic stuff - no full on bombs and guns and it actually got played. Looking back that was a really bold move

I remember us singing " Bell' s back " to the tune of Belfast at Elland Rd in the cup Jan 78 !

They had a near perfect vocal sound however naff they were
The music itself wasn't anything to sniff at either
I remember Mark E Smith choosing Belfast as one of his favourite songs in Melody Maker

Deserves her own thread a true genius when it came to song writing and folk music with a smattering of blues.

32 albums and many worth listening to in full over and over again if you like simple pure songs with a meaning and reflection of life in 3 minutes of time.

When Joni goes perhaps the genre of folk music will see its final passing in its rawest form but today we lost another great and may she RIP.

I was listening to some of her music recently and wondering how quick and in some sense fickle life is and how moments in time define our lives.

Most will not know here but a true giant of Broadway - she really should have had a cameo in the recent remake of West Side Story just as a nod to her work - RIP Chita Rivera
