The Who vs The Clash

The Who. No-brainer. I’ve said it before on here; The Clash are the most overrated, over-eulogised band I can think of.
Not a fan of The Clash, but not sure how a band is 'over or underrated' ? More the case of "can't understand how they are so popular"....and I and everyone has those, the Beatles for me, like about 3 songs max, and find every 'cover' better than the original ;)
The Who have some great songs, but wouldn't put them near my 'favourite' bands.

Saw the Clash four or five times between 77 and 80. I was not particularly impressed on any occasion. The first album and London Calling were very good, otherwise... meh. Totally overrated by the London-centric music media. Joe Strummer was the typical angry posh boy.

The Who...? Phenomenal is the best word I can think of to describe them. Light years ahead of the Clash, both live, and in the studio.

Absolutely no contest in my opinion.
Fully agreed, on both bands.

Saw The Who at Bingley Hall, Stafford in 1979, they were unbelievably good! Saw the Clash a year later at The Apollo & they were okay! The Who for me!

Clash at the Apollo 1979. Best remembered by me for the first time I saw Suicide. They were superb and, imo, completely blew The Clash off the stage.

The audience tried to disrupt Suicide by booing, shouting, and slow hand clapping throughout their set. Suicide just played through it getting louder and even changing tempo to match the slow handclaps. They owned the stage even though there were just the two of them (Alan Vega and Martin Rev).

The Clash looked lost on the big stage and sounded very weak.

I went out the next day and bought Suicide's album. I saw them / Alan Vega solo many times after that. They never disappointed.

Suicide 1 Clash 0

I think it's all about when you heard them. I missed the Clash by a year but did see BAD in 86. Liked The Who but not hugely.
