The winter of discontent

What do You think the reason is for no sudden resolution to a a lack of housing? Clearly there is a specific response you are waiting for someone to make.
Ive got no idea mate, I havent lived in the UK for 30 odd years. I know the country was very divided over Brexit, I personally didnt know enough about that to have/form an opinion. Ive no agenda here, I really dont know whether Brexit was a good or bad idea.
But we were told (in our media) that there was a mass exodus of mainly Europeans of all walks of life in the period after the vote. Highly educated workers as well as unqualified workers. If that is the case how is it possible to have a shortage of housing, one would expect an excess ?

Can anyone explain, why there is a housing crises in the UK, I havent lived in the UK for many years butIve read that a great many foreign born people left the UK after the Brexit vote, wouldnt you assume there to be a surplus of housing stock if that was the case ?
Is that way too simple, supply and demand.

Because social housing was made available to sell to long term tennants, with no plan from the last 6 governments to replace them with new ones.

Most Immigrant works rent private rentals despite the myth they get a council house on arrival, so those EU ones that have left don't affect the housing shortage as once gone that house is still privately owned and only available if rented, unless councils requesition the empty private houses and make them social.

Also most new builds approved have no social housing commitment attached so all these shiny new flats going up in manchester are not for residents and locals who have been on social housing waiting lists for years to decades, but for others

I can say nearly every week when boozing top end of oldham st I have spoken to people recently who say " I actually work in london or down south, but it's cheaper to live here and commute daily"

As for some areas, empty flats are investments/money laundering assets not residents, no **** will live in them and that's how the owner prefers it

Ok, it felt loaded, but since you claim it is genuine. The main reason housing hasn't suddenly freed up after Brexit and large numbers leaving is that ultimately it was an outright lie that foreigners were taking up all the housing. And a the jobs, and all the hospital beds, and of it weren't for brexit they would have taken all the toilet paper and petrol too. And whatever else needed said to amass the votes off that large section of the population. Like most other outright lies, hence the total shitshow we are in now.

This is happening because immigration from non-EU countries is much higher than EU migration and it's still rising every year, migration was until recently the highest it's ever been with us nearly topping 700,000 arrivals per year. Brexit won't change this much although it'll reduce those coming in from the EU somewhat.

Obviously there is emigration which offsets it all but when 1 person arrives they don't go and live in the emigrated persons old house. Immigrants are far more likely to gravitate towards the cities and that's where the greatest pressures on resources are being felt.

A population the size of Manchester arrives in the UK every year so imagine having to build a new Manchester every single year.

No judgements though as to whether this is a good or bad thing because there are clearly many good and bad things. The crux of it is we either stop the arrivals with all the problems that brings or we invest and build.

Perhaps the biggest tragedy is that there are over 260,000 unoccupied properties in the country (not fully up to date figures but expected to be more as a result of COVID). Granted not all will be housing but the majority are. There’s no doubting that offices can be converted and those other properties like pubs could be repurposed. To use this stock could also contribute to the country’s eco targets. Converting a property ”costs” approx 8 tonnes of carbon per unit, a new build 80 tonnes. The identity of the owners could be embarrassing to a few but the benefits are tremendous. The question is there the political will to do it? That’s another story.

Tesco website has been down for over 24 hours allegedly by actions of hackers trying to disrupt as if we're not being pissed around enough.
It means many people dependent on grocery deliveries will not get what they want today and l will only get a small portion of a fortnight's need tomorrow if it's not fixed. A visit to a store for a full shop is the last thing l want as covid infections are rising.
I cannot phone out as the 5000 minutes due yesterday are not there yet l got mobile data OK.

Googling it l cannot see any mention of it in the national media, perhaps all too busy on the match of the decade, but it is on the websites of local papers including the MUEN.
Tesco have not given anything out other than a very basic 'we have a problem' page with no details. Seems like their PR set up is as bad as ours.
Have l missed this being reported or has anybody else seen it.

Try another supermarket online if you can’t get your things at Tesco?

Not trying to be funny, just help.
