The winter of discontent

Can anyone explain, why there is a housing crises in the UK, I havent lived in the UK for many years butIve read that a great many foreign born people left the UK after the Brexit vote, wouldnt you assume there to be a surplus of housing stock if that was the case ?
Is that way too simple, supply and demand.

There is a shortage of affordable housing. 25-30 years of no council house building and developers building 5 bed detached house has led to an imbalance so you have youngsters with a kid or two stuck in a 1 bedroom flat that they can't get out of

endless new estates going around where I live in Kent. Thousands of thousands of new homes going up every few months. Personally find it crazy and I don’t know how much more roads can take. Gridlocked all the time down here , Dartford/A2/M25.

Yes thats been the case since forever, but what about all the vacated properties left by immigrant workers who left the UK ? Or did they all live in tents ?

well firstly no it hasn't. Dunno how old you are but in my life buying homes in Manchester, Bournemouth , Christchurch and North Yorkshire was always affordable for someone in a reasonably paying job - certainly up until 1997.

Second many people complained that migrant workers lived in numbers per property - so thats not to compare like with like is it? How many families would live with 5 or 6 other strangers?

Simple answers are never right.

Just did a quick google on houses in Hyde, there are 2 bed terraced houses for 110k and 125k, two bed flat for 95k. Are you saying that is unaffordable ?

Anyway you replied to my post but didnt answer my enquiry, lots of qualified professional people supposedly left the UK, not just truck drivers but scientists, nurses, engineers etc thats what we were led to believe, like a mass exodus. Surely these high earning people with families and children didnt share houses, they were in the UK for the long term. So why isnt there a surplus of properties available if theyve all gone back to Europe ?

Fucking hell. No wonder I steer clear of this stuff on here. Fuck me what a load of fucking bed wetters. Stop reading the fucking Guardian and the BBC.

Winter of Discontent.....

Jesus wept.

You should have read the I’ve got a splinter thread

So what was the "memory" of the "Winter of Discontent"?

London then, or Brighton now?

What do You think the reason is for no sudden resolution to a a lack of housing? Clearly there is a specific response you are waiting for someone to make.

LOL.

The climate change thread has many of us being dust in the wind on mass in 10 years time.

Come to think of it Al Gore said I would be floating on a life raft 40 years ago and eating insects.

Well the guru was half right given we are still in lockdown from covid until tomorrow when we are allowed to sit down on a park bench (LOL).

I hope I live the life of Aqualung without the freezing Glasgow weather.
