I'm watching this from the start too on Atlantic. On episode 5 now and so far whilst being very good, it's not as capturing as the Sopranos.

I didn't think anything could beat the Sopranos. After 5 episodes of the Wire I probably still thought that but stick with it and for me over all it pisses on it,and I thought and still think the Sopranos was amazing.

Re: The Wire.

Funny this thread popped up today, finished the last episode of season 5 last night.

I'm not prone to hyperbole, but that is the greatest body of work I have ever seen as far as a TV show goes, I'm almost afraid to go back to watching 'regular' telly cos I know it wont be able to stack up. Stick with it OP, its a slow burn at first but fuck me its good stuff.

Fave character? The Bunk, hes fooking quality :)

Re: The Wire.

My usual input into The wire

Epic genius best telly ever
it's the message the scope the characters that does it

sopranos ,breaking bad,Heimat run it close

and am thoroughly enjoying

the scaninavian and french noir stuff

but it's the wire every time for me

omar rules!

Re: The Wire.

I've been watching it on Sky Atlantic, i'm currently 6 episodes into the first series and love it already. Everyone I know who's seen it said they loved it and I can tell it won't disappoint.

Re: The Wire.

My fave seen ever in a TV programme 'Cole's Wake'

Also the f**k seen in series 1. Where Bub and McNulty check out the crime scene in the flat!! Genius

Re: The Wire.

'Bunk' Moreland: [on detail] A different look for our boy.
McNulty: Yeah, Perry Ellis, or something.
'Bunk' Moreland: Now, how would a just-rolled-out-of-bed-looking motherfucker like you, know the designer?
'Jimmy' McNulty: [pauses] Okay, I'm guessing.
'Bunk' Moreland: It's a Joseph Abboud. He puts dark buttons instead of brass on his blazers. That's the Abboud signature.
'Jimmy' McNulty: You know what they call a guy who pays that much attention to his clothes, don't you?
'Bunk' Moreland: A grown-up.

Deadwood is excellent, but it was cut short at the end of Season 3 which is a fucking travesty.

That was quality TV, gutted it got cut, the scenes with Al and Mr Wu are hilarious!

The Wire is supposedly the most realistic depiction of how drugs work from street level upwards, with the way they are bought and sold.

They also recruited quite a few cast members who were former gang members or still are (I think the girl who played Snoop got arrested last year for drugs charges of some sort), which added to the realism of the way they act and talk.

Other than the obvious characters (Jimmy, Bunk, Omar, Clay Davies, Avon, Stringer) I loved a lot of the peripheral characters especially Bodie and Slim Charles. Oh and Brother Mouzone.

Yeah they are quality, Valchek is one of my favourites of those type i recon hes hilarious!

I like how you end up loving the characters from the gangs and get genuinely gutted when some of them are killed off, which happens far too often for my fragile emotions!

Re: The Wire.

It truly is an amazing series, I've recommended it to anyone who'll listen and even those who said they won't get carried away have come back after watching it also singing it's praises.

In response to the OP and those commenting about the dialogue, BBC2 also started showing it one-episode-per-night about 2 years ago and, when it was advertised, one of the TV guide magazines ran a special "translation" article to make the street-talk understandable, so that once I'd seen two or three episodes it almost became second nature.

So much so that even after five episodes of the first season, I went out and bought the entire box-set there & then.

To those who are just starting out with it now... enjoy!

I was amazed to find that the actor playing Jimmy, Dominic West is an Eton graduate

Weird how often Brits seem to be playing yanks in TV and film. Tommy Carcetti's Irish accent did slip out quite a lot but you'd never know Jimmy or Stringer were Brits unless you knew (if you know what I mean ;)

I had no idea Stringer was English until I saw Luther. Bloody Limeys, popin up everywhere. Same with the main guy in Sons of anarchy, Jacks. Another great series to watch is the shield, fantastic.

Re: The Wire.

As the comic book guy from The Simpsons would say "Best tv show ever".

If you are just starting watching it be prepared to lose a good few weeks of your life to it and be prepared to be let down by everything else you watch after it.

What about Bubbles as a character, he's top and somone you really grow to care about.
