It happened because he was sentenced to death a long time ago. People who go on death row nowadays dont have a choice, he did whatever he did over 14 years ago but the law has changed.

Alabama is it's own little world. It was still illegal to have an interracial marriage there until the mid-90's. The people there are just so backwards.
As far as the death penalty, it's definitely an embarrassment that we still have it. It's sad that the mouth breathers and dumbasses still have so much influence here.
It's also worth noting that Alabama and Utah (where the execution took place) are conservative republican strongholds. Conservatism in the US has devolved into a bunch of religious freaks and racists. Also, the darling of the dumbass conservatives, Sarah Palin, believes that humans and dinosaurs coexisted. If McCain had won she would have been a heartbeat away from the presidency.
