They smelt of pubs,

Better stop dreaming of the quiet life -
Cos its the one well never know
And quit running for that runaway bus -
Cos those rosey days are few
And - stop apologising for the things youve never done,
Cos time is short and life is cruel -
But its up to us to change
This town called malice.
Rows and rows of disused milk floats
Stand dying in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk
Bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
Its enough to make you stop believing when tears come
Fast and furious
In a town called malice.

Struggle after struggle - year after year
The atmospheres a fine blend of ice -
Im almost stone cold dead
In a town called malice.

A whole streets belief in sundays roast beef
Gets dashed against the co-op
To either cut down on beer or the kids new gear
Its a big decision in a town called malice.

The ghost of a steam train - echoes down my track
Its at the moment bound for nowhere -
Just going round and round
Playground kids and creaking swings -
Lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will -
But Id sooner put some joy back
In this town called malice.

What a great thread.

One of my favourite bands when I was a teenager.

Paul Weller was another poet.

Great gym music - especially Tube, Underground, Malice and Beat Surrender. Class.

Loved the Weller/Noel combo for That's Ent too.

In the city there's a thousand things I want to say to you.... After the first few chart singles I bought I got into heavy metal - when punk came along many of my mates hated it, I loved it. Bought the first three Jam albums, saw them live. Superb lyrics as evidenced above. Not so sure about what I've heard of Weller's most recent stuff which, admittedly, is only snippets.

I close my eyes - I reach out my hand
And there you are - beautiful in scabs
Caressing my scalp - under the mounts of the gun towers
I shout your name - I kick out in dreams
And here we are - the searchlight beams
The siren squeals - and hopeless shuffle to certainty

The crab lice bite - the typhoid smells
And I still here - handsome in rags
A trouserless man - waiting helpless for dignity

Come to me angel, don't go to the showers
Beg, steal or borrow - now there's nothing left to take
Except eternity

And who will come - to flower our graves?
With us still here - covered with dust
Remembered by few but forgotten by the majority

Stay with me angel - don't get lost in history
Don't let all we suffered lose it's meaning in the dark
That we call memory

Class.

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude

My two favourite lines from any song ive ever heard.
Absolute genius......

Absolutely love this song but not as good as wasteland

and when or if the sun shines
lighting our once beautiful features
we'll smile but only for seconds
for to be caught smiling is to acknowledge life
a brave but useless show of compassion
and that is forbidden in this drab and colourless world

and Wormwood Scrubs,
and too many right wing meetings.

Nice to see one of my threads brought back to live from over 2 years ago.

I was reading some comments on a youtube clip of English Rose.
One poster said that Weller was actually singing about his girlfriend at that time, whilst another poster claimed that he was homesick whilst on a foreign tour, and that he was actually singing about England as a country.
Anybody care to enlighten me?

And can someone explain to me what Butterfly Collector is all about, please?
